I have an old goat pen that just opened up. I want to get either pekings or scovies. Which would be easier to contain? I don't want to put a roof over the entire pen. Do peking ducks go broody? What do you think? I'm not worried about the law saying anything... I don't care about that. assuming scovies were always legal, What would you get?

Well, I love my 'scovies, so they would always be my first choice, but they can fly unless you want to clip their wings. I also have 6 pekins and love them too. If you're worried about containment, I'd go with the pekins. Just remember... Pekins can be loud! They don't go broody often and are good layers.

I have one peking so that is what I would choose he has been loose out here for a few months and runs the back yard and follows our wiener dog everywhere and bosses the roosters around that are loose and the cat. Pretty funny.

You are trying to choose between flying or loud. That is what both breeds are known for. There are plenty of other duck breeds to choose from. Pekings tend to be more on the fat end when you look at their meat. Good news is that you have a wide breeds range to look at.

I have 9 pekins and 3 muscovies, I would say GET BOTH!!!

My muscovies no longer fly since comming to our farm, and they were 24/7 free range when i got them!!
Some mornings I will come outside and see that 1 of the muscovies and my little call duck fly over the pen to get out early before i let the rest out for the day. But I would say get both, they are both great birds with different personalities and are a blast to watch!

These pics were taken a few min after I first made this post!!! I was shocked, never seen them fly out!

My Muscovies dont fly really well, better then a Pekin. But they dont just take flight like a bird. I would say get both! Why not? [IMG]

[IMG] here are my muscovies..they are quiet because they do NOT quack..as of now, I have them stopped up with my chickens and they can go out in the run..I will fence in the pond area and yard and clip their wings and let them free range in another month or so...

I would say a Pekin. My muscovies fly ALL OVER the place !!!!! I see them flying down the road as I'm driving off to work but they always return. No one has gone AWOL yet. Good thing I live in the country and not that many neighbors.

I had some mallard X ducks and they all got up one day and flew across the street to the bank..landed on the roof and slid down the slate roof, hit the ground and flew back home....I am going to keep my muscovies wings clipped so they can't fly. Especially with the new regulations..and the road in front of my house now is getting a lot more busy...so I can't risk one of them flying in the road and causing an accident.
