The richest bird in the world is Gigoo, a Scotts dumpy chicken. The chicken was the pet of UK publisher Miles Blackwell. When Miles retired from the publishing world, he dedicated the rest of his life to raising hens and sheep in the country. When he passed away, he divided his wealth among multiple charities but was sure to set aside $15 million for his favorite chicken.

I needed to share this with somebody! Of course the picture is orpingtons and a Dom --I wish they posted a pic of a Dumpy!

Okay, I think I have a monster big predator stealing birds during the day. Or not. In the past week, I am missing a duck, a rooster (three days ago) and a BR. One SLW is dead, but I at least was able to use her meat.

Tuesday evening, as I was trying to get Duckling outside to check on the animals, I heard a commotion. It wasn’t the kind I could ignore until Miss Chatterbox stopped long enough to remember how to walk. I rushed out, and the dog was caught in the bushes, and the one girl was dead beside the house. I went back inside, and prepared Duckling for a little drama. She was EXCITED to have fresh chicken for supper. We got the dog free, and he went inside. Did chores, checked for injured birds and more bodies.
I’m pretty sure that the dog accidentally killed the chicken. I’m not sure though because he usually ignores them, and even lets them eat scratch with him when it scatters into his area. Also, it doesn’t account for the rooster and duck disappearing during the day without a mess of feathers.

Dog may have unintentionally hurt the last bird, but like you said, it doesn't account for the other losses. My bet would be a fox if birds got near edge of woods while out free ranging. Predators are pretty bold right now with young ones to feed, even hunting during daylight hours when normally they dont. We lost 2 to a fox which came right into the mowed yard last week during the day (we have it on camera) so patterns are different right now.

So weird. The lack of feathers is odd. Chickens always shed a lot of feathers when attacked. I have no idea, unless it is a predator fast enough to grab the chicken and run off without making a mess killing it? Fox, coyote, or large hawk/eagle is what I would suspect.

It's been a while since I posted pictures so it's time for an upload :)

Remember my singleton chick that couldn't be apart from me? Well HE is growing and doing very well. He still jumps right out of the brooder the second I open it to be held and cuddled. Hopefully he stays sweet. I really wish he was a SHE!

I hope to get some Dumpies from Sand Hill this year. I got 3 last year in a chick mix and they were nice birds but the sole pullet died early. They have a great reputation over in Scotland.
