Please help if you can, I have a 5-6 month old Buff Orpington that has had ribbon like stools for the past nearly 2 weeks. Most times they are normal looking other than being thin. She on occasion does have watery poop but never have I seen any blood in it. Anyway, besides that issue, my hubby said that when he went to leave them out of the coop this morning Gertie came out & promptly threw up water, no blood. She acts very healthy & is growng nicely but something is just not right & being a new chicken mommy I am at a loss what to do for her. She hasn't started laying yet but the other chicken, Gracie, that I got at the same time as her has been laying now for a week. We went to the Tractor Supply store & told the clerk there about her poop & he suggested that we get the Purina medicated food & mix it half & half with their food. We did this & they have been on the mixture a week now but there is no difference in Gertie's poop. She just started the throwing up water today as far as we know. What can be done? I don't want to lose her because of my incompetence as a new mommy. Any suggestions from any one please....
It kinda sounds like she is regurgitating water from her crop. I would check her crop daily and make sure she's eating. When I pick up a hen and put light pressure on her crop they will throw up. She might be drinking too much water. It hard to say about the poop, maybe post a picture. Some watery poop is normal. I would continue the medicated feed mix for coccidiosis since its diluted I would feed for another week and slowly ween them back on regular food i.e. do 80%reg and 20% medicated. The warning I give on medicated chick feed is that as long as your chickens are in a environment to pick up cocci so their systems can get develope immunity, you should be fine. I had a friend that had her chicks in a shed on medicated chick feed, then she put the chicks outside with hens when they got old enough and switched them to regular food. They died in 2-3 days because their immune systems were never exposed to cocci while being on medicated feed. The necropsy came back and they died from over load on cocci. :( I also had a chick that got neurological from medicated feed because of the binding of thiamine also known as vit b1. I had to give her inj of vit b1 in the thigh for a week. I know it scary, I am just glad I work at a animal hospital so I learned these things. I think in your case you should be okay since you are mixing it half and half. I would also give them 1Tbs of apple cider vinegar per gallon water, make sure they get some kind of grit (u can get at tsc) and u can supplement protein with some calf manna to help her put on weight. You could always separate her and put in a dog/cat crate so you can make sure she is eating. I feed my chickens 17% chick grower mash from hoke mills, supplement with calf manna, grit and oyster shell. I use ACV in their water for a week every month, deworm with wazine 1-2 times a year and cocci with corid 1-2 times a year. This seems to be working for me. I'm sure other people will have some recommendations as well. Good luck!

Thanks, I'll try what you say, I'm so worried. I bought the apple cider vinegar but didn't start it yet, I'll do that today. She is acting & looking the picture of health. She is noticably larger than Gracie, as she has been since we bought them. I'll post their recent pics as well as a pic of Gerties poop...my camera was putting too much orange/red in pics & I have since adjusted it so while the pic looks like there is blood in the poop, I assure you it is only from the camera. (I took pics of my bro in law & his wife & they looked like they overdosed on self tanning lotion...lol) The first pic is Gracie & Gertie is in the 2nd one. And of course the poop is pretty self explanatory....lol Thanks so much for your prompt response. At this point I don't think I need to go out & get Calf Manna yet as she seems to be growing normally. I know she is eating OK as I watch them in their run area a lot through out the day & they do free range in my fenced in yard each evening for an hour or 2 as weather permits.

Congratulations, I'm glad to see you were able to enter. Will you be showing at the York Fair? The premium book and entry forms are online.

Thank you!
Yes I will! I already entered online but I didnt submit it yet. I'm debating on entering my large black cochin pullet she is getting very pretty and has very nice legs on her. I think the deadline is aug 20, so I have some time. I am showing my silkies at the south mountain fair.

not sure how many of you do your own processing,,,I need a local supply of equipment......bags, labels,etc....also a good knife set with clever and scissors,, i break a pair of scissors about every other week (need to quit buying the cheap ones )..

Since I have been processing every weekend and doing about 10 at a time,  it is getting a little pricey always running to the grocery store for bags,,looked at the shrink wrap bags and do not want to go that route,,,I need to keep my cost down to be able to keep cost down for customers..

would also like a recipe for chicken sausage.....(my local darrenkamp's sells some that we all like, but will not tell me what's in it )

Wing:

Don't know about the rest, but, I'd suggest a brand of knife called "Klenk"...they are made for cutting duct work and are the sharpest knife you can find anywhere....they are about $15.00 and about 6". Be careful they are scalpel sharp and slow to dull....and I have one of those shrink wrap machines...they are great but the rolls/bags are expensive...my two cents.....

PS: if memory server Beaglady(SP) posted links/books on sausage and smoking.....

Finally sticking p for itself!

I am in love with he/she! I thought the curls where ugly before like kinda messy or uncared for? But now I love it!
And it has some straight feathers too! I can't wait for it to lose some feathers to make a dream catcher with them!

Did anyone else feel their blood pressure rising as they read it?

I felt the author had some kind of attitude while writing it. Like a true city slicker attitude that got mad when assigned to write about the topic.

I didn't get that feeling, really. I trout it was kind of lit hearted and well, generally dumb. I mean, I found it amusing but I didn't feel like the writer was in favor or against PETA or the general treatment of chickens. I guess my official opinion on the article is..."meh".

I can sooo see where you're coming from. But based on the column, I think the author is usually snide when he writes these. And also I remember a time, not too long ago, before I had my first chickens. I didn't understand what was great about them until I had them as pets, even though I am an avid animal lover. Just depends on how you read the article I guess :p
