people with house chickens

I promise you my next one will be a Serama. i have three roosters right now and only 6 hens. So I am trying to keep the peace. And I have plans to hatch out a few more babies in the Spring, so I already know like 90% will be Roosters Its just Murphys Law. Or McMurrays Law with chickens. Ha ha. I caught my boys squaring off and they looked like upside down umberellas with their cape feathers all spread out wide. It reminded me exactly of an unfolded umbrella. Right now Ican yell atthem and break up any fights. They all work in conjunctionwith each other. But they do have all their own fave hens so right now all is well. Im not sure if they have sons will they still be ok with them. i can just see my yard next fall with dog outdoor kennels all over because I am too sentimental to getrid of my boys. Its chicken math rules. Once they have names, they are family and they stay....My boys come in and I wrap them up in baby blankets....they each have their own. Early has a pink one (dont tell his brothers) Roody has a blue one with teddy bears, and Sammy Sam has a turqoise one with a ducky on it. They are such big babies, when they get scared they suck on their tongues like a baby with a binky...still though they do a super job watching the girls so can't conmplain. My boys are girly so what

mHey is that little guy banging his head on the wall saying dammit? Guess its bed time.....take care
LOL! Well maybe a little serama would set them straight! I love that Toy takes total charge, even of the big boys. He is my little alpha lol.
My husband is just like you, if it has a name he can't let it die. I think I may be broken, as I love having chickens and geese in the house as my "dog", but when that outdoor rooster starts picking on my hens or attacking me, I can TASTE the rooster noodle soup in the air... I'm all for the select few as pets, but I'm also all for eating my extras =P I do a lot of processing for people locally that don't want to do it themselves. It's tough at first, but now it's hard not to see everyone as dinner.

Hahaha, if a factory farmer saw this thread....it wouldn't be pretty

LOL I love that he had such an impact on you! You should totally get one. Too bad you are in washington, I have 5 roos from a hatch of 6! You can HAVE them! LOL
Well... all but Sylvester, he's my baby lol. They are just the perfect little toy size though lol

You're making me want one now too! It would be so cute to see a little Serama running around with my big girls. But since we're moving into city limits next month, no roosters for me. Unless I had some insane amount of luck and managed to find a silent crower somewhere. :lau

I don't even think I could have a rooster in the house either. Sunni would never allow it.

Yeah I realize I am a big wuss. I truthfully have had trouble eating chicken since owning them and having pet chickens. I think something is wrong with me not you. I can't even eat the eggs because I feel like I am eating one of my own Grandbabies. I realize that at some point I am going to have to get over it and toughen up. Even worse, I just got a certification for Veterinarian Assistant. . ]]]]

Poor Sunni! Can't allow any house competition now can we?! Lol
Such attitude!

I can try to help you with the eggs! Eggs are just sustenance for those grandbabies =) all you are doing is eating their leftovers since theres no baby inside. Just helping your girls out =)
I finished my vet assisting a year so and was in school for tech, that's WHY I'm do into the food aspect. I even brought rooster enchiladas to a class pot luck. I also have a very different outlook on animals from most of the other students though, I can totally understand how you see your chickens =) I don't think you are broken, I think you just aren't ready yet. Death is just something that doesn't bother me much anymore. My bleeding heart focuses elsewhere though, I definitely have my own "suck it up" moments haha

I took some pictures of Madame Sunni just now. She is back to cruising around the house (with extreme supervision now). We still tube fed her this morning, but she is starting to get her aim back and managed to eat just a few pellets last night and this morning. She jumped up onto her roost at bedtime by herself, and jumped down this morning without any stumbling or dizziness. Every day I am seeing more improvements from her. She was even scratching and pecking through her shavings in her coop this morning. Today is day 4 since the incident with our dog.

She has a few scuffs along the right side of her beak, and a small scratch just above her left waddle. I don't know if you can see it in the photos, but she has a bruise just behind her eye on the left side that spreads down to her ear. The bruise is from the small puncture wound that she has on the top of her head. You can't really see it unless you lift up her feathers, but the bruise is dark greenish blue and spreads over most of the top of her head.

Earlier our dog jumped down from the couch and she growled and hissed at him, so she's definitely scared of him. I want be letting him anywhere near her, or her anywhere near him anymore. I can tell by the way our dog looks at her that he's sorry, but I don't trust him.

She's looking good! That makes me so happy! Told ya she'd be fine :)

Awww how did I miss these pictures....Now I can finally see how cute they are. Spring is never gonna get here. How are you holding up? My Guineas don't even seem to realize one is missing. I know this is going to sound morbid and I apologize but I can't bear to bury it yet. I stuck it in the big game freezer. The ground is frozen solid here and I want to bury it, not throw it in the trash like garbage....hope your doing ok.....It sucks to lose a little one.

I'm doing alright, thanks. The one who didn't make it was the little black one. If it had to happen, I'm glad it did when it did. I didn't get the chance to get stupidly attached to him, so I guess that's the silver lining here.

The night after it happened, my little Sebright and I snuggled up on the couch together. I was miserable. I fell asleep for about an hour, only to wake up with her sleeping soundly against my cheek. I think it was her way of comforting me, and making sure I didn't have any sad dreams. There's something really special about that bird. She knew exactly what I needed.

That is so sweet. I think animals just have a way of knowing when we are sad, and they know just how to comfort you. When I thought Sunni was going to pass, one of my cats came and snuggled by me for a long time. An he's normally not a snuggler. It's no wonder we all have such a hard time not getting attached to animals. They always manage to find a soft spot in your heart. :)

Glad to hear Sunni is on the mend....she would be missed terribly.

Phantom, glad your on the mend too. Funny how Mother Nature takes care of itself. Sometimes we don't understand the reasons why, but we have to trust that there was a reason or maybe that it was for the best. Thats cute you have a snuggler too. My little white cochin tucks under mychin and wiggles her butt....and her neck and coos at me. A lot of fluffy butt to snuggle with. Course my roosters do it too and suck on their tongues. Little wuss boys.My pen is completely covered now so no more predating to be had here. Also my Guineas when I tucked them in right now, decided to bunk with the chickens in the big coop so they are going to be one big happy (ugly, bald, helmeted) family..and warm. I am checking out for now, it's tequila Saturday so am signing off before I get blabbery. Have a good night everyone.

Thanks :)

I have a couple of cuddlers (Phantom, my rooster being #1), but the Sebright... Not so much. She's still very young (just over 3 weeks old), and as you all probably know, that breed tends to be on the flighty side. I've been trying to get her, my other Sebright (I think that's what he is), and one of the d'uccle babies I'm keeping more used to handling. It seems like her and I have a thing. Hard to explain, but that night, she just wanted to cuddle with me and make sure I was okay. She's been cuddly and friendly ever since.
