people with house chickens

Pancake is loosing the last of her baby feathers on her head. She is almost 100% feathered in.

My baby is growing up.

Small is good for indoor ones. Easier! But i love my easter eggers (outside). I tried to bring my favorite one indoors permanently but i waited until she was too old and she pined for the flock, so she had to go back. Have not had the mini of those; bantam cochins and d'uccles are a sweet docile breed too. I had d'uccles indoors for the winter.

Agreed. The bantam breeds make the easiest in-house pets. Silkies however are more of a challenge because of all the fluff on their body. Makes it harder to use diapers on them. I was so glad when our Silkie was old enough to integrate with the main flock after quarantine.

Our Blue Wheaten Ameraucana was inhouse for quarantine before integrating with the main flock. Her breed is gentle, sweet, easy to handle, talkative, however the LF is just too kooky, jittery, klutzy, noisy, to make a good in-house pet. Sweet and gentle as rain but really is better as an outdoor bird. Like fuzzybutt love says the bantam version EEs might be a good choice since the breed is so sweet in general and actually like to interact with humans physically and vocally.

Just be aware that most bantam breeds except for maybe Cochins and Silkies are very flighty active birds and will be constantly flitting about the house.

Joining this thread and soooo excited! I have a Banatam Cochin named Peep and have had her as an indoor bird since she hatched :) I absolutely love her and she goes inside and outside freely, so she can forage and dust to her hearts content. She loves sitting on our lap or snuggling up to watch TV at night. She has her own "house" that we made from a dog cage so she has a place to lay her egg and retreat to some quiet when she wants. It amazes me what a sweet personality she has

Thanks! I am a teacher and my students named her

she is so friendly and great with them when I bring her in...I have a pre-k/kinder special education class! We hatch chicks and ducks every year! When Peep hatched, she was so different from the others...followed me around, looking to sit in my lap, chatting away ect. When I researched and found out what type of chicken she was and what was required to care for her we decided to keep her and her sister...its been love ever since. Unfortunately we had to rehome her sister...Chirp. She was a Bantam Silkie and they did not get along. I have tried to get Peep a buddy several times, but it hasn't really worked out well and Peep was never even interested in the other chickens. Funny enough...our neighbors have a bunny that hops around and Peep loves her! Go figure

My "Peep" actually doesn't make a lot of noise either! She clucks when she gets excited...sounds like a chuckle! About once a month she will "Ba-Gawk" once or twice and scare herself silly...LOL. Then doesn't do it again for another month or so!
