people with house chickens

Pics
Hi! I'm new here. Just became the proud momma to two silkie hens named Laverne and Shirley. I've posted on other threads but wanted to join this one as my girls sleep in my kitchen (*gasp* yes the kitchen!) in a rabbit cage at night and free ranges the kitchen and backyard by day! They love my golden retrievers and cats and seem very happy!

Here is a picture of Perry (3 year old golden) and Laverne (6 mo silkie) snuggled up in the kitchen. The dogs are not allowed in the kitchen so this was especially sweet as Perry (my incredibly obedient dog) broke the rules and snuggled up with her! I had to take a picture before I said "bad dog, outta the kitchen" he was not happy when I took her away either. LOL.

By the way, i use regular dish soap to wash the floors at night and i rinse with water. Is there a non-toxic cleaner I could use? I feel like I'm keeping things pretty darn clean. Still I get judged by most when they hear I have two chickens in my kitchen. What a sad world it is

What a sweet picture! Love Perry's expression! I have found peroxide works great on cleaning dried chicken poop. It fizzes the poop off the floor. Distilled vinegar and enzyme solution are the main cleaners I use in our multi-species household.

i found last year when i started hatching chickens that i had a bad reaction to bleach and products containing it. so my dh found some interesting stuff on using peroxide to clean different things. doctors offices don't use bleach or most other cleaning products, they tend to use peroxide to clean surfaces. i also tend to use AC vinegar, it seems to neutralize odors when it has dried.

Dbaas what cute babies. I just love seeing that animals can get along. my dogs and cats are great with my chickens too. Even the 5 week old ones. But I am convinced the lab wants to eat the ducks. DH says he just wants to play. I think not.

I use vinegar to claen all surfaces and simple green on the floors

Don't worry about what people say. If they are not judging you on the chickens, they would probably just find something else to talk about. For having such developed brains and large hearts the human race in general is pretty intolerante of things we do not agree with or understand. As long as your happy thats all that matters.

My life wouldnt be the same if I never would have brought Gabby in. She is so comical. And now that Tilly is in the house to... Its just sweet to see the different personalities and how they interact with everyone.

I'm glad I came back to check this thread! Lots of cute photos and good information. My house chickens are in cages only because I don't trust my cats and dogs, but I take them out to hold them and play. I have been using bleach for years (my vet office uses it and where I learned about it), but have recently been experiencing some bad reaction to it on my hands. I am going to look into peroxide and vinegar. Thank you!

Thank You!! Tilly and Gabby are adorable too. I'm going to start with the vinegar ASAP! This thread is wonderful, makes me feel so OK, ya know? Someone sent me an email today that said "so how are the "birds" doing?" how is it possible to be so negative over email???? "birds" sheesh

They sure are a mess, arent they?

I have a little porcelain D'Uccle. She is tiny but can make the biggest mess you have ever seen in your life. Not with poop, but she jumps in the plant that got killed (I wonder how it died?

) and goes to town. Dirt will be scattered for a 6 foot radius all around. Then...she goes to eat. If I wet the food its not quite as bad, but even then she shakes her head when she eats wet food, I think just to see how big a mess she can make.

I had a standard size hen til she got killed by neighbors dog.
