Mom dipped her toes into scent work for the first time this year with one of her dogs and recently came back from a trial. They did well!

What I love about Mom's training is that she lets the dogs do what they want to do, though they all learn basic obedience, obviously. She originally got this dog, Dezi, because she had wanted a dog to do agility with. But Dezi was bored by agility - and rally, and obedience, and whatever else it was Mom was running her other dogs through at the time. Instead of pushing Dezi to conform to what Mom had originally wanted out of the dog, Mom decided to pivot and try out something new, and Dezi loved it!

I've probably mentioned it before, but Mom started working as a dog trainer just a few years ago and my favorite bit of advice I've ever heard from her since she really got into it is that to get a well trained dog, you need to lower or adjust your expectations until you're able to call whatever your dog is doing a success. Mom wanted an agility dog out of Dezi and wound up doing scent work - success!

Congratulations to her and Dezi!
Dezi is beautiful!

That is really good advice. I set my expectations high for Tucker hoping to work reactivity out of him. And months ago i dropped them learning that it doesnt matter what the expectations are. We have more fun now. And he is more focused on me.

Dogs are like kids. You can't put expectations on them when young. They will both grow up to be who they are meant to be.

Not even every pup in the seeing eye dog program is cut out for the job. Some are meant to just be great pets. We need to adjust ourselves for whatever each dog needs. Sometimes they surprise you.
