WOW.

My jaw is still on the floor.
Jason, the owner of Performance Poultry here in Ontario is the rudest man I have ever dealt with.
I pick up my 20 day old (5 of each breed) and get them home. The next day when I take them out of the brooder to photograph, I realize maybe he hadn't given me 5 easter eggers like I ordered, but only 3--, and I could only identify 2 Brown Leghorns, when I also ordered 5 of those. It seemed to me (new to chickens last year) that he had given me 9 Welsummers..(instead of 5 ordered). I did get the correct amount of silver laced Wyandottes (5).When I sent him a very polite email with photos, asking if there had been a mistake, it is ignored. I resend. Ignored again.
I call- my call is not returned. I finally speak to him today (10 days later!!!) and he CHEWS ME OUT saying he is busy and I have no idea what I'm looking at- that I got 5 of each breed I ordered. That I need to stop bugging him and that I should learn how to count!!!!

No, Im not kidding- he asked me "How hard is it to count to 20?" (the total amount of birds recieved was never in question).
So here are the 20 birds I picked up.

Why don't we let the chicken experts tell me if I'm the idiot he claims I am. Here are the photos.

Can anyone tell me if there are 5 EE in the bunch, and 5 Brown Leghorns?

It's really tough because Welsummers and brown Leghorn chicks look very much alike. Easter eggers, too, often look like Brown Leghorns as chicks, but not always, and they should have greenish legs, but not always. I will give it a try, but understand that I could be off.

Pic 1- could be 2 Easter eggers. Pea combs, if you can tell the comb type yet, would confirm, as would the indication of beards.

Pic 2- 3 SLW

Pic 3- 2 SLW

Pic 4- could be 3 EE. The legs are too dark to be Leghorns or Welsummers.

Pic 5- Guessing 1 Welsummer, 1 brown Leghorn.

Pic 6- Guessing 2 Welsummers

Pic 7- Guessing 1 Welsummer, 1 brown Leghorn

Pic 8- Guessing 2 brown Leghorns

Pic 9- Guessing 1 Welsummer, 1 brown Leghorn

So I think it is possible they got the order right, but it is no excuse for poor customer service or rudeness. I imagine it a very stressful time for hatcheries, so maybe some forbearance is in order or simply choose another hatchery next time. However, if the order is wrong then you will have to deal with this guy again, unfortunately. Now it's time to wait and see what those cute chickies develop into. In a few weeks, you should know for sure.

Thanks for sharing your experience, I will keep that in mind when I get my first chicks in Ontario. Won't be for years since I'm living in an apt but this helps me when the time comes. I heard he is indeed busy this time of year and often runs out of breeds and has to substitute.

Substituting without getting the go ahead from customers is a big no-no as far as I'm concerned. If he does that then I would reconsider giving him my business.

I will NEVER go there again. He was SCREAMING at me on the phone this morning.

Jed Jackson--Thanks for your guesses. That's all he would've needed to say in the email response (which I never got) - "Brown leghorns and Welsummers look similar, please wait and see, not all EE have grey legs, check for comb type in a few weeks".

I am just appalled at his behaviour, and after his wife (who was the only one there when I picked up my order) was so kind and friendly. Its mind boggling.

That sounds terrible. I am sorry you had to go through that-- I wouldn't do business with them again, either. It sounds like the husband needs a less stressful job and the wife needs a less stressful husband.

As far as the chicks go, the two in the first picture look like they could be Easter eggers, but they also might not be. Same goes for the two chicks on the right in picture 4. Those two looks suspiciously like some silver penciled variety like Campine, but they could certainly be Easter eggers, too.

This forum is open 24/7. If you need more help later on, send updated pictures and the folks here will be glad to help. Good luck!

I think he usually informs the customer that he's out of a certain breed but this might not be the case..wish I could tell the difference between welsummer and brown leghorn chicks. Jed's guesses on the slw and ee are good
