Pet Peeves

Quote:
You see, having these terms used is one of my biggest pet peeves.

I scold people for calling me ma'am, Miss, or Mrs.

I won't even allow my students to call me these. They can call me Professor, as that is a non-gender specific job title, though.

I despise Ma'am as it reflects ideas of superiority over other people.

I do not allow Miss or Mrs. because we do not use titles for men in this country that reflect their marital status. (Master used to be used for young boys but has been out of circulation for a very long time.) Until men have their marital status referenced every time they are spoken to, I will not allow people to do this with me.

Professor reflects only what I do for a living. I also only use the title for work.

Other pet peeves?

Watery coffee. Starbucks coffee. Stale coffee. Bad coffee. The coffee most of my coworkers make at work...

People who honk their horn at me because they think I should have turned left because they would have darted across the traffic. Sorry buddy, but I know what acceleration my car gets and I know when I'm comfortable traveling across four lanes of traffic. You will not decide for me...

People who think I should drive at whatever speed THEY want to go. Speed limit means the maximum allowable speed in good weather and road conditions. Unless minimum speeds are posted, I will drive slower than the speed limit if I choose to do so.

My college teachers hated for us to call them professors, so we just called them Mr. or Mrs or Miss. I hated that term "Professor". Made me think of Gilligan's Island.

You'd hate me, then. Here in NC, I've been raised on ma'am and sir.

How does ma'am say anything about "superiority" anyhow? It's just being respectful.

Q9, we were raised the same way. It's just being respectful of others. Maybe some people don't want or deserve that respect. Just saying.

Nope, Q9. I wouldn't hate you. I just wouldn't answer you when you called me ma'am. Or, at least I wouldn't after the first time...

Kuntrygirl to be a devils advocate - are you saying that kids raised not saying ma'am or sir were raised without manners? My kids weren't raised using those terms but they definately had manners.

We might turn that around. How does saying "Ma'am" to someone imply respect?
