Hi everyone I’m new to this site as well as geese and ducks. I want to explain the whole thing so it’ll be long but please read! I’m so confused/ upset....
We have 3 Pekin females ( 3 months) and then found an abandoned Canadian gosling -Philip ( 2 months now) and immediately got him a friend who was a Rouen duck since the girls bullied him when he was a baby.
Dillup got killed last Sunday by careless people speeding through our backyard portion of the driveway. Everyone was upset and we wanted to get Philip a new friend. This time we found a goose, she’s a mix and a sweetheart, her name is Luci.
They got along great the first day, Philip even seemed a little weary. But then it changed.
Now I may have raised Philip wrong because of my lack of experience but he was a lap baby I always had him around me, hand fed, etc. Which is now why I think he’s so mouthy with me- he’s always nibbling and now it’s not always cute.
So anyway yesterday he started really biting at her a few times. He would grip on and she would run. Then I made a huge mistake. I was in the pen with Luci waiting for Philip trying to get a little better acquainted with Luci. When Philip came in I was petting him a little and he lost it full blown attacking her over and over. As I was pushing him away. Then I grabbed him and kind of held him down and he stayed down not moving so I was thinking that was the right thing, kinda like how you do it with dogs.
Well they are separated in the sleeping pen anyway. But idk I’m so upset. Maybe it needs more time? They are ok usually within a few feet of each other but every so often I see from the window that he will nip/ bite her. Especially when she gets close and tries to talk to him. So I get he prob thinks we are his flock and protecting us but I don’t want to never be able to be around them or he’ll lose his marbles... I read how geese live very long so I want to make sure this isn’t a huge problem in the future.
Will this get better, will he hate her forever? Should we get Luci’s sister so she won’t be lonely? I don’t know I’m worried. I’m searching goose behavior, but I wonder if it’s different since he’s a Canadian goose maybe he’s more wild?
