The sun was setting and they were becoming agitated. They didn't know to go into the coop. From their point of view they were in an open expanse and the coop entrance was a dark square leading to who knows where.
I put a light bulb on the window sill on the outside and lit the coup. Like moths to a candle they all perked up and acted like "oh yeah...that looks nice and safe" and then all made their way into the coop.
I had one straggler but after a few minutes of gentle chasing she finally went inside and I slid the door down into place.
