pictures of molting chicken?

My rooster going through molt. Some eclipse molt also involved. What you see is pretty close to natural appearance during molt cycle. During entire process feathers are being replaced as lost so capacity for flight not lost.

From distance in peak feather.

Eclipse feathers are black tipped on hackles. This seldom seen in domesticated chickens.

wow....he sure isn't 'all that' during molt...poor guy. Are roosters still 'active' during a molt?

He is free ranging tending his brood. He will cover hens if they solicit but otherwise he is more involved with juvenile offspring. The eclipse molt I think is in part a form or camoflouge.

Same rooster with his flock. Other flocks totalling about 80 birds also present and he spends a good deal of time keeping them in check in respect to his territory.

EDITED: In respect house roo, no. He and flock currently roost on front porch as they have been doing for last year. I do bring him periodically for weighing and photographs. He does get special treatment and observations. See following link: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?pid=7231642#p7231642

I am pretty sure mine are molting. There are feathers everywhere and we are down to 2-3 eggs from 9 layers. We were getting at least 5-6 during our weeks of 110 degree weather.

Also when I checked the girls over there are quil feathers under their other feathers but to look at them you can't tell.

mother o' chicks72 :

he a welsummer? pretty little bird when in peak feather.

He is an American game (a.k.a fighting chicken). Up coming feather set should be better since it will be a full-cock feather set. Previous (stag) set grown in while he was still growing in frame and muscle. Color pattern also slightly different on secondaries of wings.
