Also, what are your thought on breeding breeds like Pouters/Croppers with especially large globes, Owls with short beaks, or fantails that hold their heads so far back? Is it ethical to breed for characteristics that make life more difficult for them?

I have 11 fliers now, four of em are young birds I raised this year. Scalped youngster The recovered scalpee is the best of my young birds. Still has a bit of a bald spot. Grass looks horrible as we are in a record drought…
Hawk finally came back this week after 8 months of no issues, hasn’t even come close to grabbing one yet.

I was not aware of this. Realistically any animal doing what it was bred to do is not cruel in my estimation. Exceptions to this are bull fighting, cock fighting, and dog fighting.

Even then, one could argue that it’s only “cruel” to the loosing participant

Having said that, if anyone is getting their underpants in a twist over racing pigeons, I would say they need a firm kick in the pants to understand what happens each and every day with the industry behind pigeon extermination…

There’s a better way… I can’t find the article right now… ( edit: Found it and added below) But there was a study about how to control pigeon populations in cities without poisons…

Basically give the pigeons a place to lay their eggs, replace the eggs with wooden eggs, Wala pigeon birth control… and way cheaper than poisoning them…

We operate several supervised pigeon shots in the Stuttgart city area, in which the pigeons are cared for and their eggs are exchanged for dummies so that no offspring hatch. By the end of 2019, there had been well over 45,000 eggs. By feeding grain mixtures in our shots, the animals are no longer forced to look for food on the streets and squares in the area. They spend 80% of the day and the entire night in the dovecote. Ergo - your droppings also stay there and no longer land on roofs or balconies.

Well, most of the time when two animals are fighting to the death, the "winner" gets pretty beat up too
