Pigeon Talk

Congratulations - pigeons are a blast. Did you get Indian Fantails or American Fantails? Can't tell from the pics.
I could offer a couple of basic pointers. First, no mice in the coop. Pigeons are very sensitive to the pathogens they carry. Also, make sure they have CLEAN water with no poop in it.
Parlor Rollers tend to be very flighty, and when they get scared they start rolling, so you want to keep things nice and calm around them. I'm sure I don't need to say this, but never let children play with them. Too much rolling is bad for them. And you may need fosters if you plan to breed them - they usually are not good egg sitters and tend to break their eggs.
Have fun!

Hello @PigeonLady. Some good advice there. I have had mice on the tray under my loft that catches the spilt seed and poop. I've caught 3 so far, none for a couple of days though.
Now, tell me that I've been wrong. I think that Boomer is actually male. I've noticed boomer and Beau seemingly pairing up but boomer has always been the one to appear to be driving beau and acting more cockish in the loft recently. Today boomer was chasing beau on top of the loft and I noticed how much bigger boomer is. Watch this and thoughts on a postcard! Boomer is the one with the red ring and I'm zooming in on and trying to follow. Beau is the smaller one being chased.

I'm seeing what you see. :D Beau is the checker, yes? I thought you got the idea Boomer was a hen from her prev owner. From what I can see Beau is the hen.

Yes. Previous owner definately said boomer was a hen. I thought/hoped that beau was a male. I seems the other way round. It makes no odds. I'll still be happy for them to pair!

The seller of my first birds told me their genders and although I was too excited to remember what he said as to each bird, I'm sure it was approx half and half. WRONG!I got 6 hens and 2 cocks - those two cocks, I do remember he said was a pair. lol So even long timers can't always be sure unless they've already paired and raised young.

I'm going to put some nest bowls in for them tomorrow. I have four pairs. I've already removed two eggs. I can't stop them doing what comes natural do I'll make it more comfortable for them. Hopefully then I will see exactly what is what with them!

I released my pigeons yesterday on a nice warm bright day at around 2:00 after not feeding them yesterday morning or the morning before.
I released them in a large open field a half mile from my house, two of them immediately took off and began circling and the other two sat on a telephone wire and wouldn't move. Eventually the two that did fly disappeared in the direction of my house and the other two on the wire just sat there for about thirty minutes. I managed to call the two that were sitting on the wire down and bring them home myself, but the other two never came home. Those two were my best birds and I am honestly shocked they didn't make it back. What did I do wrong?

I have done the same - provide bowls and boxes for them to 'play house' while instituting a zero child policy. If there are losses this year I might be able to let some breed, but I can't hope for that!:(
