Pigeon Talk

Yes, egg #1. Shadow has been back in her nest again too, but she probably has a few more days before she lay.
And I saw Duff in a nest today for the first time.
I think I skipped pigeon math and went straight to pigeon calculus.

Beautiful pair. :clap
:celebrate
Pigeon calculus.. too funny! :clap
Well, good news and bad news. One of my birds, (a roller) is very weak and can't fly. This has happened to 5 other birds and I can't figure it out. It goes away with a 4in 1 tab. So I'm treating it. Does anyone know what it is? I've only lost 2 birds from it. 1st 3times I didn't have treatment, and that's when they died.

Good news! A pair of rollers has laid an egg, and my pair of white homers has also! gonna let them hatch out, cause have some people wanting to keep a few. But the whites are mine :)
Dang.. Im sorry about the sickly one.. hope it gets better soon..:fl
Congrats on the eggs! :woot
When olive is sleepy her shape becomes somewhat like a loaf of bread. She is very open to snuggles when loafing like this. She has a soft shelf and a nest but sleeps on a small wooden ledge. View attachment 1683715 View attachment 1683716
She is just so sweet! :love

@sourland I read that, about the parlor rollers. Do you know what age? I’m not even sure these can fly now. They can get lift, but I think they are already past full flight stage. It’s about time to take them into the office and see what they can do. We’ve been super busy in the evenings and I’ve been trying to let them acclimate to the cage, etc.
I just stumbled on this thread and am only on page 28... i've been binge reading and will likely get caught up this evening. :)

Which ones are the parlor rollers? I LOVE those beautiful babies with the white feathers and big eyes. I'll keep reading and see how many of my questions get answered before I ask any more questions. LOL

Parlor rollers are flightless breed bred to tumble\roll on the ground. The one in my baby is a parlor. @WVduckchick also has a pair.

:frow Welcome! The white/laced-wing ones with the big eyes are Satinettes (a variety of Oriental Frills) The parlor rollers are the black one and the ash-red one. Glad to have you join us!

Pigeons are very addictive, once you get to love them. :)

Okay I’ve skimmed through. Lots of good information here!

Welcome aboard. :frow

Parlor rollers are a pigeon breed bred to be off-balance so that they are unable to fly as adults and can only tumble forwards in an uncontrolled somersault. The "best" ones keep flopping around on the ground for several minutes in a state of panic before righting themselves. As their traits prevent the expression of natural behavior and cause a lot of duress I feel they are an unethical breed. Pet quality parlor rollers don't roll as extremely and can fly when young but they are still really messed up.

They are different from tumbler pigeons and normal rollers, which roll somersaults while flying on their own accord and not due to a physical issue that affects their ability to fly.

I only support the breeding of animals with superficial changes to their form - colors, crests, some structural changes are of little effect on quality of life, but things like parlor rollers, Budapest tumbler pigeons (which have eyes too large for their sockets), Jacobins with crests too large to see out of and things like the Barb pigeon whose enormous ceres result in them being unable to close their eyes (resulting in blindness) are unethical to produce.
