Momma duck is beautiful!

Took a turkey to an avian vet. They had no turkey experience. She had an impacted crop which he actually was able to treat. Had to leave her for the day & get to work. When I picked her up she was in his office roosting on the back of his chair. She's a big blue slate layed back pet & he fell in love with her. Couldn't believe how easy she was to work with. Plus she followed him around the office. I almost choked over the bill...but I'm so attached to her I needed to try.

I miss my blue slate turkey hen.
Hope she is all fixed up and good as new, despite the expense.

I didn't get much out of the vet when I took Doba either. I couldn't afford x-rays and such to look for anything the vet couldn't find on exam so I just took her home, thinking about euthanasia but resolved to give her a chance to get better on her own. At least Doba was able to eat and drink so that was a plus. I hope yours is able to pull through. I think you are doing right by her, trying to give her every chance.

I agree. I've gotten more useful advise here than from any vet. Daisy's situation was getting dire or I wouldn't have gone to the vet. She's recovered and doing great! She's like a dog with feathers. Comes when I call, even hops in my lap & takes a nap.

I'm glad you had access to an avian vet. Turkeys sound like great fun! The vet I saw was described as the one in the practice who 'sees birds'. So I think her experience was limited. When I discovered Doba couldn't fly I kind of panicked and wanted a professional to look and see if I was missing something obvious. I am grateful for her input but she did not even know to suggest calcium. Her advice on PT was useful. My regular vet for Tucker is afraid of birds, smh! She warned me not to bring her a pigeon. She would do fecals though.

The avian guy I went to said he tried to look up information and there just isn't much published on our kinds of birds. Most of what is published caters to commercial production facilities. But we did get Daisy sorted out...even if it cost a bunch!

With the explosion of city chickens ( and pidgeon & turkeys) you'd think the avian docs would want to capture that business. The avian guy I went to said he tried to look up information and there just isn't much published on our kinds of birds. Most of what is published caters to commercial production facilities. But we did get Daisy sorted out...even if it cost a bunch!

I'm glad you got her sorted. Vets that see birds can be very few and far between. The first time I needed to take a bird to the vet it was a quail, they said it was 'exotic'! Really? A quail! I do have a avian vet now but it's a bit of a drive. It's far better to come on here and exhaust all avenues first. I wont go now unless it's a dire emergency.

I only kept mine for about 5 months, since she was the only one that hatched, I thought she needed flock of her own kind. I tried to find more, but ended up selling her. One of the few sales that I regret.
She was always first to greet me when my car pulled in the driveway, I could hear her first.

They get a bit bigger than that, and much heavier! One of my "fondest" memories of her is grabbing her down from a chest-high roosting spot she chose every evening at dark. I'd have to get her down and put her inside with the chickens. One night I failed to secure one wing and she popped me in the side of the face so hard! She was very strong!
