Pigeon Talk

I can't believe you guys still have snow!
I still have about six inches on the ground :hit

That sounds positive! How many peas are you giving at one time?:)
I have a mess too under my loft from the melting. I gave her about fifteen which is roughly the same amount of food she normally gets.

Sweet! :love I want duckies! I need a duck pond!

It's not taken you long to increase capacity....just in case! :gig
That was my excuse for not getting ducks when I first came to BYC...Still dont have a pond! :lau
They do great with a kiddie pool!:D
Momma duck is beautiful!

Took a turkey to an avian vet. They had no turkey experience. She had an impacted crop which he actually was able to treat. Had to leave her for the day & get to work. When I picked her up she was in his office roosting on the back of his chair. She's a big blue slate layed back pet & he fell in love with her. Couldn't believe how easy she was to work with. Plus she followed him around the office. I almost choked over the bill...but I'm so attached to her I needed to try.
Thank you!
Im glad she's gonna be ok!
I agree. I've gotten more useful advise here than from any vet. Daisy's situation was getting dire or I wouldn't have gone to the vet. She's recovered and doing great! She's like a dog with feathers. Comes when I call, even hops in my lap & takes a nap.

She's so pretty! :love
Awww she looks so sweet!

I only kept mine for about 5 months, since she was the only one that hatched, I thought she needed flock of her own kind. I tried to find more, but ended up selling her. One of the few sales that I regret.
She was always first to greet me when my car pulled in the driveway, I could hear her first.

:love:love:love
Love the one of you and her!
She kept the peas I gave her this morning down thankfully.

I had her out on the floor to see how her walking around was and she decided to fly which was a bit frightening. She spun in a big circle and I was able to catch her before she smacked into anything. I'm rooting for her with this neck injury because everything else seems to work fine.
For all I know, the reason she's been throwing up is that she's been making herself sick spinning around. Can pigeons get dizzy?
That's good news! I hope she continues to improve! :fl
So it's 59°F and raining with lots of the birds out in the aviary trying to catch a shower.:) The aviary 'floor' is a mess however with the poop melting into an unsanitary slurry on top of the snow pack.:barnie As a temporary measure I put a tarp and a sheet of cardboard to cover it. Once the snow melts the gravel works pretty well to drain away poop, at least so far.

I'm a bit further north than London! It has been 'not cold' but still a bit chilly! It would be better if we weren't being battered by storm gareth! High winds and rain :(. My wheely bin blew over! :gig
:barnie it was sprinkling in town while I was out today.. its storming now but at least it waited till I got home! :D
@cavemanrich ;) I beat you! Getting close to @Texas Kiki !

We were close to 80 too. But temps are dropping like a rock. This winter has been the worst!
WVduckchick....your slate was darling. My Daisy & her roommate Flora are wonderful pets. They especially like kids & let the neighborhood kids hug 'em & play with their feathers. Such good girls!

The dominant cock has been courting the last hen in the loft all day now. I first witnessed him feeding and courting her yesterday which surprised me because up until that point he seemed to hate her and the other cock, the only one he really liked was the injured white hen. He is the oldest at about 6 months and the first to show any real breeding behavior, I think the hen and other cock are several weeks younger.
I was planning on making some breeding boxes in their own unit like the ones in this video. I figured I had more time until the weather got warmer. Should I get on that now or do I have time to wait? I was honestly hoping they'd wait a bit to breed

They'll probably go ahead on the own time. Can you just put a box and a bowl in the loft for them? I even use a cardboard box in a pinch. Those boxes in the vid are nice though!:)

Re the injured hen - 10-15 peas is about half as many as I have fed at one time, BUT until she stops vomiting I think you are better off staying with that lesser amount. Possibly you could try 2 or 3 small feedings per day.

Yes I'll probably put a box in there anyway. I just don't want him to get frustrated and beat up on the only good hen left, especially since I'm not sure if she's even old enough to breed. She doesn't really run from him but she also doesn't allow him to mate with her. Like I said though I did see him feed her. He's already been terrorizing the other cock.
I've been aiming for three feedings a day with the most in the morning and least at night. I put a wooden block in there for her to sleep on since I'm pretty confident she won't fall off it now.
