Pigeon Talk

This guy is really starting to learn to strut his stuff. I put my GoPro in there for a few hours and took a few five minute clips and put on my youtube to show ya'll. He's looking good! I think this one is Check. The other, lesser dominant male or female ( we haven't seen mating yet and the other one doesn't display like this guy ) doesn't go to the back part of the cage that much. Some time this week I'll be putting them some roosts in. I'll be tossing them out into the aviary next week to get some fly time. They'll just have to stay away from the pheasants!

I started a new job and haven't been able to post in a long time. We lost one of our eggs. It got cracked in the nest and didn't make it. We did however just hatch our other egg this morning!!!! Super excited. Should I take the shell out of the nest or will mom eat it?

Congrats! It's so fun having the first squab in the loft! The parents will eat or remove the shell. Don't worry about it!

:love He looks quite proud of himself. I'd love to get a few of those sometime but its very hard to find pigeons around here, it took me forever just to get some homers.
I put the nest bowl in a sideways milk crate in the loft. I'll update you all as to what the two lovebirds do with it.

Well, Duff didn’t follow the nest box when I moved it. I took the one off the ground and put it in a better spot. She laid an egg today on the ground where the box was! Now what do I do??

I could either just take the eggs until she lays in a better spot, or put the box back there and put the egg in it, or wait till she sits a couple days and move her and the eggs?

Wait... Which pair is this? I forgot... I would move it back of you want more babies. Was it on the ground?

This is a new pair I have seen mating recently and she had been in a box that I had put on the ground when I had the parlor rollers in the same pen. I didn’t really want her laying in it, so I moved it, but she laid her egg on the ground where the box was before I moved it.

It’s these 2. Duff is the female on the left, Breezy is the male on the right. They should make some pretty babies!

Ya, they will be pretty! I personally would move it back, but once the squabs hatch and are out of the nest, move it back up.

In a perfect world you can expect eggs in a maximum of 10 days. Most likely less than that in your case.
If you do decide to move your squabs (if and when they do arrive) pay close attention to their crops I have had pigeons abandon their young just for cleaning the nest area. Always keep in mind you are rolling the dice when you tamper with a pigeons nest in all cases.

I think I would put the box back with the egg and let them do their thing where they have decided. In future I would lock them in a breeding box at least until the clutch is set if I didn't want them on the floor.

Loper and 735 were nesting in a box on the floor next to the door to the aviary. I waited until they had been sitting for a few days and raised it up about 10 inches on one of those Rubbermaid Step stools. I did this during the day while 735 was on the nest and he stayed put. Loper came in from the aviary and examined the new situation. She could easily see her mate on the nest in her cardboard box, only about 10 inches above its prev location. Still she went underneath and looked around carefully at the floor where it used to be... perhaps trying to formulate a theory as to the cause of the change and make sure the eggs were not there. It was funny, she circled around looking at the changed setup from several angles. After a few minutes she seemed to accept it and she got on for the night with no problem. If I had tried to move the nest much farther I think I would have had trouble and would probably have to put a cage over it. Also, if I had tried to move it between the first and second egg I think there could have been problems.

How are Brick and Brewer?:)
