Pigeon Talk

Aww...so Olive snuggles into her pink fuzzy bed each night? That is cute!

Yes, she tucks into her bed every night to sleep, and naps there during the day here and there too.

On the subject of budgies, when I had a larger group of them I offered a hamster wheel for a year but the most they ever did was sit in it.

At the moment I have a budgie who is under the weather with something respiratory. I have started him on a round of Enrofloxacin (Baytril) in the drinking water but he is less active than he was even yesterday. :(

Have you thought about doing some tosses with him? You could use this as a motivation. It would also give the other cock a chance to relax whilst the dominant is making his way back.
I have confidence in that bird as I've watched him easily outmaneuver and escape from hawks in the yard but I really don't like the idea of sending him on a toss and having him get picked off by something, leaving me with a brother/sister pair. The hawks are still really bad here.
He's really my best pigeon by far, the fastest, quickest to trap in when they come down, and he seems to be the general leader of the flock when they're up and out. He is the one who encourages the others to start routing as opposed to just sitting on the roof. As much of a pain in the butt as he is I can't bear the thought of losing him especially in the state the loft is in now.

That method is similar to the widowhood method in which racers fly, right?

Yes. You keep them apart and allow limited access to each other. When they release them the only thought on his mind is to get home to his partner. It's pretty basic really but it's effective and the most commonly used method for racing.

When its warmer out and the hawks aren't as bad I can start doing that if he's still attacking the other cock so badly. The weather has taken a turn in the past week and he hasn't been very happy about me making him sit outside in the sleet so the others can feed.
Some good news however is that when I did let him in he fed for several minutes before chasing the other cock off the feeder, so that's a little progress.

Look who is settling in! Please ignore the algae in the water. It's a daily battle here.
Nice! I like the colers!

One of my birds just got out... A mostly white homer. But I got it back! This thing is so smart. It has trapped in once, several MONTHS ago. But it just trapped when I opened the trap just now!

I started a new job and haven't been able to post in a long time. We lost one of our eggs. It got cracked in the nest and didn't make it. We did however just hatch our other egg this morning!!!! Super excited. Should I take the shell out of the nest or will mom eat it?

Well done on both counts! It's a shame about the one egg but it sometimes happens. The parents will probably throw the shell out. If not you can remove it.
