Pigeon Talk

Since we were on the topic of if canaries can be tame earlier, check out this little guy. He's super tame, flies to his owner's hand from his cage, hangs out on his lap and shoulder, etc.

They can be tame like that when they are hand-raised from before their eyes open, and socialized heavily for the first few months after. I hand raised several abandoned babies in 2016 but even then, ultimately they did not stay trusting once they learned to fly. It may work better with a single baby and not a group. Regardless, this is a special bird.

I have hand-trained Java sparrows and society finches, but have made no progress ever getting an adult canary to come to my hand.

Forgot to add pics!
That's a very nice design! I like the nesting shelves.
Yes I do. It has ten birds in it... I'm building another though :)View attachment 1708249
That's a very nice loft, not unlike what I wanted mine to turn out like. ;) Do you have any pictures of the inside?

Update on my birds:
I've begun taking Blackjack out and making him sit on the roof of the loft while I feed so that the other poor cock can eat. Normally I wouldn't want him out alone like that but he just paces around waiting for me to open the trap the whole time because he's so anxious to get back inside and reassert himself that he doesn't even have interest in flying. Under my supervision it doesn't worry me too much. However it is a big inconvenience, and I'm missing the days when I had four in the loft and the fighting wasn't as bad. The dominant cock was always a bit of a bully toward the two grizzled birds but it was never constant harassment and they usually all ate together with no issues. I think now that there's only one female which he paired with he feels like he constantly has to assert himself to the less dominant cock?
As per somebody's (sorry, its been about a week and I forgot who lol) suggestion, I put a cardboard box in there to see if he would take to it. He didn't and it ended up getting knocked all around by the cocks fighting. I replaced it with a heavy bowl, just to see if they would show interest, and today when I got home from work he and the hen were poking around in it and I did witness an actual mating today. I'm not sure if letting him have a nest will make his behavior worse but I'm willing to try it. Regardless if it doesn't improve I'm going to separate the pair by building a breeding cage and locking them in it because the poor other cock is probably being driven insane. Another option is to borrow an adult hen from the guy I got my birds from to let the other cock breed with but I certainly can't do that with Blackjack currently raining hell inside the loft.

He felt like showing off so I figured I’d share a picture...
