Pigeon Talk

That is exactly how I felt,,,,,,, so I would always start the wedding rings on day 4. I simply put all toes together. Band often would fall off, so next day I would redo again. Then I got on the idea to use some yarn, or athletic tape to prevent ring from sliding off just for a few days. It worked, and in few days, I removed yarn or tape. I just did not want any broken thumbs,,,,:hit

I noticed one of my young ones missing it’s band this evening. Had to dig, but finally found it and replaced it. Thought for sure he had gotten too big, but I got it back on.

Speaking of the squeakers, Dipsy and Dazzle, I brought them both inside tonight. Dipsy doesn’t look good, and Dazzle was out of the nest box, hiding in a corner. I weighed them and Dazzle is double Dipsy’s weight. 75 grams vs. 150 grams. :( The visible difference is amazing, it’s hard to believe they are both 14 days old.
But I hope with some tube feeding now, I can save Dipsy. :fl

I'm sure you can, but nothing's for sure. Did dipsy hatch a day later?

Time for another canary update?

The babies (left to right they are Junebug, Lightning and Thunder)are 18 days or so now. They are very close to fledging. Also attached a photo of my society finches which helped care for them in the first couple days. They now have four eggs of their own which I hope will hatch soon.

Nice! I see an aquarium... What ya got?

I think the babies are simply too big already. They hatched last Thursday.
The first one is the scariest.

I found a small plastic zip tie the answer to pulling the back toe through a band.
Once the back toe protrudes through the bottom of band slip the zip tie through the space between the toe and the leg.
Grab the zip tie by both ends.
Pull the zip tie slowly.
The toe will follow through the band.
Pay attention to the toe nail as it enters the band you may have to suppress it.
Before you know it the procedure is completed.

Oops! I now see where you are an expert in your own right.
"Good News" Just a suggestion do what ever works.

I used vaseline and they went on like a breeze.

Yes they come off a lot easier than they went on.
Even the back toe nail is out of the way and more obliging.
It is wise that you check on the bands daily.
Guaranteed
in a few more days that will never be an issue again.

I've been doing some planning and I'd like to build myself a 4x8 or 4x6 loft that I can walk into sometime soon.
My only hesitation is that my losses were very high this season and I'm not sure if I want to invest in a large loft if I'm just going to be feeding the resident Cooper's. I think I'll see how this summer goes before I make any decisions...

My only suggestion is to make it bigger! I know space and finances can be a problem, but I have an 6 by 8 coop, and I thought it would be a mansion, but once perches and boxes are in, it's small. I made it 100% out of pallet wood, so that I could make it bigger. Lumber is pricey!
