Pigeon Talk

Condolences for Rosie, she was so lucky to know you, as are your four new hens. It's not at all hard to understand why the member would be so determined to place her girls with you! They could not have landed in a better place.:hugs

As for the new pigeon, ... weren't you just saying you would like to see some white on a bird??:D Why do you think it's a cock?

It must be lonely for the last hen at the stable, ... will you take her in too or get her a friend?

Thankyou. :hugs my ex battery hens mean so much to me. The lady at the stables said it had been trying to pair with another pigeon she has that is definately a female. I think it is too young to start that. I felt between its pelvic bones and they are incredibly close but again I think it's still too young. It's smaller than #41! And my usual level of luck dictates that it will be a male! Whatever! I just hope it settles!
I hope that they get some more chickens at the stables. She said she wanted some more. The last one is called Charlotte, the one that died was called sugar and my DW is always raiding my feed for then! I offered them a cockeral but no bueno :(.

Well it's been a weekend of mixed emotion, ups and downs. I lost one of my ex battery hens on Friday night. She has been unwell for a while and living in my house. She collapsed on Friday and couldn't stand or eat. I had to finish it. I was a little upset to say the least. :hitRIP Rosie 3yrs 8mths.

A week ago I had a PM from another UK member saying that she was being forced to rehome her 4 hens because she wasn't allowed to keep them where she lived. She was unaware of this when she got them and had grown incredibly attached. She wanted me to take them. I agreed and gave spent all week making preperations for them. Short story they arrived yesterday, she drove over 160 miles to bring them to me. She was so upset and it was probably the most humbling thing for me that she believed that I am the best option for her hens to be safe and well cared for. The bar had been set high. This is Roo a buff Orpington,

Pedro a rhode island red,

They are 4 very sweet hens and in very good health. That was yesterday.
Today we were at the stables and I found one of the two hens that they have there had died in the night. She was quite an old hen but still sad. Well now for the good news that is actually about pigeons! The lady that owns the stables had an avairy that she puts any pigeons that get injured or babies that have fallen out of nests, she's as soft as we are! She had a lovely youngster that I think is probably about 9-10 weeks old. It had never flown out side of the avairy. It is a little beauty and now it's mine!

I'll have to keep it in for a while but hopefully it will settle and become part of the flock! I also think it's a he.
Sorry about the long post but it's been a crazy weird emotional weekend.
I am so sorry about your hen. She was beutiful!

Nice new chickens! They are so pretty! How old are they? How many roos do you have now?I

Gorgeous pigeon! I see it's banded. Is it a racer? He looks gorgeous! Unusual bars on it!

I follow your reasoning with regard to gender and especially the luck part.:lau Still, it's young as you say and I was confident Loper was male until she laid her eggs.:D

No more roos! They thought she was a cockeral and called her roo! All 4 are hens. Lilah and Pedro were the first two she got about 12 mths Lilah hatched roo in August last year and jellybean is about 6 mths also.
The band on the pigeon is one of mine with my phone number. It was a feral hatch. But yes, I love it. Its turned up just at the right time!

Oh ok! Goes to show how much I know about chickens... I thought roo since the saddle feathers appear to be drooped, but the comb isn't big enough.

Did you band the baby while on its nest? Or is it snap on?

I missed banding the white homer babys! :barnie

I thought they were 5days old. Forgot that they're 7! Either way at I'm happy though. They are growing strong and healthy.

I also got an egg from my other white homer pair! Yay!

Did you even try banding? I banded one 10days old, ... sure it was on the small side but ... If you can slowly work the band past the knuckle to where you see the back toe then it could still be flexible enough to pull through.
Yay for the eggs! You have two white homer pairs? Going to train for ceremonial release?

I did try. With coconut oil. I'll post pics tommorrow, but these birds are huge! The band's are also tall, so it gets past the 3toes, but once trying to get past the last one, I can't pull it through.

Yes, my hope is to do releases for friends, and eventually be a small business. :)

One of the two new squeakers is huge also. They are 2 weeks now and I have set up the same cage to protect them as I used for Loper and 735.

As it turned out 1743 does not have splayed leg as you can see from the photo with wings extended. 1744 does have a small pocket of pus like @backyard pigeons bird, but no scab/opening yet.
