Pigeon Talk

I had to go and get some feed today. I've been getting a few different types and mixing a bucket up to find the best mix for them. I started with this as it's a good mix of peas.

This one has alot of different seeds but seems to make them fairly picky on what they like.

I've been mixing a couple of scoops to make a blend that seems to have no wastage.
This one is good to fill it out a little. It a little heavy with wheat and barley.

There not flying as much as I'd like now that it's dark when I return from work so dont need too much of a high energy mix. I'm trying to get as much flying time at weekends as possible.
I also got the some bath salts!

I can't get borax to help with mites or lice, not that I think they have any, but this is good for condition and getting rid of itches! It also smells really really nice! I may have some myself!

Hi @LamarshFish I wonder if you are still flying your birds? Is it time to stop for the winter?:(

Well I have 4 YBs (about 3 months old) who I've been loft flying as much as I can for the past 10 days or so, but I only fly them with 2-3 hours left of light. Few times after I let them out, I've seen hawks circling around, but they all came back. My loft is at its capacity max, so if I lose a few of them training it's not the end of the world to me. The question is whether I should start tossing them during hawk season. I think they'll be ready for a 1-2 mile toss next week. The rest of my birds though, lock down (except #10, who flies out of my loft every morning when I feed my birds, hangs out for about 15 minutes, then goes back in, it's just sort of his routine).

Can pigeons get wry neck? I have this situation going on:

It was panicking a bit there, but you can see its head is stuck in a sideways position. Aside from this, it's okay, though I'm worried it can't eat like this. If this was a chicken I'd call it wry neck. It hasn't been outside, it's been living in my workshop, and I wormed it when I first got it, along with the other two, who are both fine.

I'm slightly concerned it might be paramyxovirus, but I don't know how it would have caught it living inside.

I guess I would suspect PMV too.

@Pyxis you should make sure he is warm and do not allow access to any bowl of water or bath because it may easily drown. They can recover if kept fed and hydrated. Thawed frozen peas and or corn are a good option for hand feeding if needed bc they provide fluids as well. They can fight off the virus with supportive care and once recoverd they are immune to further infection by PMV. Recovery period is said to be 2-3 weeks.
