You really want them to get up in the air IMO. because they can get UP faster than hawks, but hawks can go DOWN faster then them. So it's when they get pinned close to the ground when it is game over. A hawk chasing a bird high up over the trees doesn't normally stand a chance. When they come to land, that could be a prime attack time though.

have you considered raising fancy breeds?
I think my issue lies strongly with the fact that I have so many hawks of different species around. I had the Cooper's which hide and ambush the birds and kill them when they're in the yard, and can easily outmaneuver them, and now the peregrines, (I've seen two at once before, today only one) which could surely get them in the open air. We also have large numbers of red tail and red shouldered hawks that are almost constantly present and make the birds very nervous. They are too big and slow to catch an able bodied bird but they seem to spook them a lot. There's a pair of the red shouldered hawks that nest somewhere nearby and they will circle the area screaming for literally hours each day. Several days ago I had the two red shouldered hawks circling as well as a pair of the much bigger red tails fly low over the yard followed by the Cooper's sitting on the loft that same morning.
Despite that, my Cooper's hawk sightings have greatly diminished now that there's more prey for them but in the big picture my hawk sightings have significantly increased from one species up to three as well as the falcons. I have considered fancy breeds and will probably move on to them if I continue to have poor luck with flying breeds.

Speaking of eggs, I found one on the ground today! It was closest to Bugsy’s nest, but her squeaker is still pretty young, only 3 weeks old today. It’s out of the nest and learning to fly, but that’s still pretty quick, isn’t it?
I did see Duff messing around in her old nest box, it’s been a week since I found Galaxy dead, 4 weeks since Galaxy hatched.

I brought the egg inside, maybe it’s from one of the other youngsters that just didn’t choose a nest. I’ll try to watch tomorrow and see who’s been mating.

It does seem early. Do you have any hens that are not mated, buy old enough to breed. If so, it's probably them. Are you going to bate it?

I hope to figure out over the weekend who laid it. I’ve had a lot going on, hadn’t even tried to figure out genders on the young ones yet. But Brick and Brewer are probably both old enough. I’ll have to consult my spreadsheet. :D
