Pigeon Talk

Alright, I need y'alls help. I have done tons of research but nothing matches up.

I have lost 5 rollers (all in the same coop) in 2weeks... :( I cannot find out what it is. One day they look great, the next, dead. A few of them slowly get weaker, till they can't fly, but not all of them. They lose lots of weight. I have been giving them 4-1 tabs, along with vet-r-x in their water. (The vetrx is for upper respiratory infection...) I now have 8 rollers. :( the water is clean, food is fresh, and the coop is clean, but it is a dirt bottom one... they are flying daily, but I did lose one a week before flying them the same way, so it isn't something there eating. Mixture of ages... Any help would be appreciated. It thankfully hasn't spread between coop to coop.

@casportpony ?

Do you mean 4 in 1 tabs? Looks like those treat for canker, paratyphoid, cocciodiosis, and e.coli, so if it's not helping, you're probably not dealing with one of those. Vet RX will do nothing for an actual infection, there is no real antibiotic it in. I'd try some All in One. It will deworm, in case it's worms, and also has Tylan, which is an antibiotic for respiratory diseases. It will also keep treating for coccidiosis and canker. And, it has probiotics to help rebuild good bacteria.

Ok thank you so much pyxis! I will order some tonight. Have you ever used the product?

I haven't, but I keep it on hand. Well, I have used it, when I got the tumblers in, but that was just a preventative and to deworm them in case they had worms.

I too really like the looks of dowels for the nest box fronts, but I'm not entirely sure how to go about building a nest front with them. Would anyone be willing to give me a quick run-down of how to make the fronts with them?
This is how I have been trying to make my fronts.

And this is how they should look fitted. Unpainted.

But this is what's happening.

Either the dowls are too big or the wood on the top and bottom isn't very good. Idk.
So I have an old chicken nesting box laying around, this one, and was considering putting it in the loft for now for the pigeons to use. I dunno, do you guys think they would use them, with a nesting bowl added, of course?
That would work great. I'm not sure exactly how big that is but you can get proper fronts for pigeon nest boxes that just attach to a plastic clip that is screwed in.

Sorry about your birds. Its a cause for concern. They don't just drop dead for no reason. Pyxis has given some good advice. Try the all in one and see if there is an improvement. Also sterilise all your feeders and drinkers. You can use a little bleach and rinse them out.

A couple of weeks ago I had a scare when I "found Loper dead in the aviary". As it turned out, it was NOT Loper but rather a feral that looked just like her! The dead bird was very thin and I remember seeing it the previous day looking a bit ill and thinking with surprise I needed to investigate what was going on with "Loper". Fortunately all my birds seem healthy so far despite contact with that bird.:fl

Other strange news - I had a pair build their nest UNDER the loft.

Also, sold/rehomed the 4 most recent accidental hatches to a man who has wanted some like his brother had years ago. He had built 2 large lofts and was willing to keep some adult stock birds captive to get started. He really wanted me to sell him some pairs as well. So I figured that the pair who nested under the loft would be perfect for him and offered them at no charge. I also decided to help him out with one other pair. He seemed happy and his wife seemed to enjoy the birds and take an interest too. She really wanted one of the 'brown'(Ash red, lol) ones! I told her I'd call her if Doba produced anymore.:D

It's always fun to meet a starting fancier! It seems like he has done his research. That is very odd about the feral.

Does your loft seem I empty now? :p I remember when I sold three birds, (not to @Fields Mountain Farm ) and the coop seemed so much emptyer! :gig

You've got to be careful with dead ferals. You don't know what finished them off. Good news on the youngsters. They will be a credit to you and the guy and his wife will have a two pairs of very good birds. I understand him wanting doba! I love the colour!

Sounds like something along the lines of adenovirus/adenocoli. It used to only really affect young birds, but nowadays I think it's also affecting old birds too. Not much you can do about the virus part, but the ecoli part is what you need to manage. Having a dirt floor in the loft can make it more difficult. Not sure but you might need to lime the floor heavily. Make sure you keep any ferals away... they are often harboring some nasties which can infect your birds.
