Pigeon Talk

Does anyone heat their aviaries in cold climates? Just curious. Haven't seen anyone mention it....
No added heat in my loft and we are certain to have many days with lows in the minus teens. Same rule as chickens, no drafts on the perching areas but good passive air-flow type ventilation. The pigeons will fluff their feathers according to how much insulating value they require. I only add some clear plastic to cover the open roof gable on the west side where the wind usually comes from. And I only do this bc of one pair who have claimed this upper level as theirs. Didn't feel like they'd give it up even with a cold wind blowing through so I put up the clear plastic as a wind break. The east side remains open.

Even on the coldest days they come out into the aviary. I usually feed them there. We believe that the cold winters contribute to hardy, longer lived birds in WI - 12-16 years vs FL where they don't last as long usually. Many nasty microbes are killed off by the yearly freezes.:)

I visited the parrot colony again today, tried to photograph the nests but you can't really see them, there are dozens and dozens of huge stick structures all along under the bridge in the metal beams along the edge. I must have seen 200 parrots around the area today, fortunately no fallen chicks. I did find myself wondering what was up with this one extra small parrot that periodically would fly by in close formation with a few others and when it landed in a tree I was able to see it was in fact not a quaker parrot at all but a yellow budgie that must have gotten lost. It had found the closest company it could, and the parrots seemed to accept it. There is safety in numbers and they must be leading it to food sources, but I doubt it will endure our winters like the larger ones do.

Usually I try to catch stray budgies when I spot them but this one seemed to be having a good time, and had found a flock. His life wild might not be long, but he definitely was enjoying it flying around the city with his giant friends.

Unfortunately, they were too far to photograph either.

Adding on to that, a new photo of my parrot and his own little budgie friend. He doesn't look quite this HUGE in comparison inperson but in photos it's like he doubles in size.

 He does look ridiculously big in that picture! I'm glad he has settled and enjoying his new life with you :)

they look awesome! Very pretty! Are they friendly? How well can they fly? Do you think you would loft fly them ever?
Kiwi is tamer. He's not scared to come and land on me if he wants a perch! Coco is a little more flighty though. They can both fly reasonably well, they have come from a good home where they had plenty of space. I'm not sure if I want to fly them, I would be heartbroken to lose any of them. I may see what happens next year if I let them hatch any youngsters.
