Pigeon Talk

I’d like to ask if these poops seem normal to all of you? I’ve noticed some green ones in the cage but I’m not sure who from. Neither of these are green but there’s clear differences even though they are getting everything the same..

that's alright. So, I lost one. :( a racer. I don't know what happened, the parents were on it during the night, but it was dead in the morning. No canker. It was the smaller of the two, so it may have been squished, but I don't think it was that far behind where it could have been squished.

The same morning, I found one of my new birds from Rogers Homers (split2ndloft) dead on the floor. It's left side had blood around it's ear and eye. Do you think it either ruptured its eardrum? Is that possible? Or maybe it got spooked by something during the night and it tryed to fly and hit a sharp wire\nail with its eye? I don't know. But either way, these deaths were to close together for me, so with the flu and a 101.5 fever, I raked out the loft, and bleached water and food pans.

Oh the life of a pigeon fancier.

All the birds otherwise seem healthy, good droppings, active, etc. I do have to many birds in that loft, but I am waiting for them to start pairing up. I want 3 pairs of white homers, and three pairs of racing homers for breeding. Right now I have 2 pairs of racers, and 2 pairs of whites.

I have started flying three pure white homers. They are gorgeous! I love watching them flap their wings! so I am flying 12 birds right now. Not together yet, because the white homers are just starting.

I lost a racer on a loft fly. when I got him (from the gentleman who races in my town) his wing feathers were destroyed. A rat during the night had eaten them. So, from the advice of the gentleman, I clipped his wing feathers. He could not fly well for the longest time. Up until a few weeks ago that is. He started flying up to a low spot in a tree. Well, three days ago he slowly went from his low spot to another branch to another branch. Before long he was in the very top of a tree. He then took off with the racers flying, but he just couldn't keep up. I lost sight of him. I think he got exhausted and went down somewhere, and probably got hit by a hawk. :( he was a fun little guy.

So sorry for a long post. There was alot update you guys on. :)
I’m sorry for your losses :hugs I hope the fever didn’t kick you in the bum too hard, nasty dealing with that and cleaning a loft you are a great fancier.

Okay that’s good, I’ll try to take a picture of the green poops if there is any tomorrow when I get home from work!

The two pigeons are doing alright for the most part. Eating, drinking, and pooping lots! I actually just came to the realization that the one that had the injury (on the right) most likely can’t grow feathers on the scar tissue and that’s the reason I only ever see that one shivering because the other one doesn’t/hasn’t that I’ve seen :he I’m mad at myself for not thinking this sooner so I could work out a solution. They normally get the heat light at a slight distance to keep the chill at bay.

I am also still convinced that one is male while the other I think female with it being quieter than the other since the beginning. It still acts young and looks it more so than the first though. I still hope it’s two boys so I can just let them be bachelors and not worry about collecting eggs from their rather high up loft

What am I doing wrong? I just went out to find another dead baby. this time a white homer. I don't get it. Y'alls birds breed all the time, mine dont. when I do get babies, I'm lucky if they both survive. do you guys feed pellets or grain? Shavings or no shavings on the floor? Nest bowls or no nest bowls?
Last year and earlier this year most of my squabs died. I think it could have been due to canker, as that’s what one of my more recent Fantail squeakers was lost from. I’ll need to get some canker treatment for them.

And I use a pigeon mix for feed, no shavings on the floor, and mine just nest in cat litter boxes and tubs with holes in them on the ground, as I’m yet to get some nest boxes in there. The tubs with holes are more recent, the good thing with them is the other pigeons can’t really go in and attack the bubs.

Sorry about your losses :hmm
@BP I'm sorry I don't have an idea as to why that keeps happening, is it possible they got too cold?

I've had a pair sitting on some fakes for about a month or more. You might remember the ones who made the zip tie nest. I was away for a few days and at some point they just decided to lay two more in the nest. It's a bit ridiculous seeing them straddle four eggs so I took out the fakes. I guess I'll let them hatch these two and if I get more cockbirds I'll attempt to sell them because the ratio of cocks to hens in my loft is 4:1 right now.

In my loft it is the complete opposite, I have a surplus of hens.

Sorry to hear about your losses BP. I don't know what to suggest. Mine are just nest in clay bowls with tobacco stalks and straw. I make my own mix for feed from two different mixes. There is nothing on the floor. I do give 11in1 supplements in the water as well. I haven't let much breeding happen this year but I haven't had any problems with the ones I have.
