Pigeon Talk

I would leave them alone for now. When are they supposed to hatch?

I wasn’t planning to mess with her again.
She laid the first egg on either November 12th or 13th, the second on the 14th. I saw the first one on the 13th, but wasn’t sure if I even checked on the 12th, so it could have been there. But I know the 2nd was laid on the 14th.
So Dec 1st will be day 17. I’m not sure what her incubation period is? 17-19??

Incubation takes 17-18 days. But most often 17. Im ashamed to say, but i forgot when my port egg was laid. I only record when they hatch, not when theyre laid.

Well these were the first eggs she has laid, so I took pictures and checked the file dates :gig

Going to get 2 birds with one stone. :gig
Anise, and squirrels.
I guess so. They are attracted to the aniseed smell and add that to being hungry it gets them to trap almost immediately, no messing about. I'm not sure how far they can smell but when I mixed a little in my garage you could smell it in the house!
I wonder how GREAT it may be to catch feral pigeons like in the barn by luring them into a cage/trap with that anise laced feed.:thumbsup
On a different subject about anise................... Way long ago when I was a young snipe, used to read Field and Stream outdoor magazine. There was an article about making anise flavored bait. :yesss:
I purchased anise oil from grocery store. Most likely intended for Holiday Cookies. :drool:drool:drool

A pair of squirrels are driving me crazy. They go in the aviary and even the loft looking for food. They spook the birds too. :barnie
Squirrels and I go back a VERY LONG TIME. Used to get them going into my loft all the time. I suspect that they did damage some pigeon eggs in the process.
This one ready to enter aviary. (fits thru the cage wires ) and thru port opening into loft inside. Note,,,, that showing no fear of me as camera is only inches away in my arm.:idunno

Cant beat them,,,,,,,, then join them.:old
So my solution was to feed them in a separate location. Worked out well.

My chickens don’t seem to mind the squirrels running around, so I leave some open feeders in the yard.

And I never had it to happen until this year, but oddly I have caught about 10 squirrels in my live traps lately. It’s not even baited! I leave it open for possums, raccoons, etc. I don’t know why they are going in it.

@cavemanrich will you ever get back into pigeons? You had white homers right?
That is correct on the whites. I intend to get loft going as soon as I have the pigeon dust issue solved. I may redo loft (new one free standing like Bio has) This way I can vent it outdoors continuously.

Once you caught the first squirrel the scent it left in the trap attracted the next and the catch was on ------------------------------

What breed will you get when you get back in the pigeon fancy hobby?

White homers. I would get a batch of ferals, but they are not plentiful in my area in white. Would have to get @CCUK to send me some of that paint. :)
I just loft fly, and release on special occasions. No fast racers needed , just good ole homing skills.
You are new here so you may not have seen this pix.
I did this Every Sept 11 th. Those are my Grandchildren.
