We have Cooper's and Red Tail hawks. I have captured them on security video a couple times, even saw one not too long ago, still in my yard on a fresh cockerel kill. So I will most likely stick with fancy breeds and not let them fly, except maybe in the netted run.

I think they watch us and figure out our favorites on purpose.

We have those.. I worry about flying pigeons too.. Ive been thinking if I do a loft inside the aviary, instead of using the camper. I could go with fancy pigeons and theyed have the whole aviary to be out in when they wanted .. idk, just thinkin "out loud'..lol

Racing homers are pretty hawk proof. Not 100% though. As you probably know, my blue bar got caught but i saved it.

I have a love/hate relationship with raptors. I have dozens of similar memories - some the birds won others the hawks won. Hawks would generally attack as the birds were coming in to land. They were hawk evasive while flying. I can still hear the aerodynamic sound of a Pergrine falcon chasing a pigeon down to earth. Pigeon hit a fence by the loft and so did the hawk. Pigeon ran beneath loft and hawk flew away. Within minutes hawk returned and landed on ground searching for pigeon - highly unusual I think for a Peregrine.

I would stand in the back yard calling the birds in and clapping my hands to ward off the hawks. I had a good red mottled cock bird that was generally late coming in. One day I thought that he had cooped and started towards the house just as I turned I saw a Cooper's snag him right at the landing board. I felt guilty about that.

I loved flying, breeding, selecting my birds but at my present location (that I hope to never leave) I just can't justify doing it any longer. I miss them.

The hawks we mostly have problems with here are Peregrines. We do get red kites, I'm not sure if they're the same as red rails? Buzzards and further north there is golden eagles! I really don't want them near my loft!

I suspect it will come down to what may be easily available in your area... at least to start with, then see where it goes. If that man hadn't had the Satinettes listed, I may never have considered them. Strombergs has single Satinettes for $60 each, which I would maybe consider paying for Bugsy a mate, but shipping is another $80! I don't know how I'll find her a mate.

Do you want one or multiple breeds? Or are you not sure?! I reccomend getting breeds with multiple things you like about them. Like i got rollers so i could watch them fly and try to get some coler breeding going.
