Pigeon Talk

I thought already posted this. I'm going to build 2 big flight pens in my barn for the capuchins and modenas. I wonder how good a modena pigeon can fly hmmm... I'm sure I will find out.

This says they have "good" flying ability. I can't remember anyone on this forum having the breed, but I just got into pigeons recently, so maybe some of the others will know.

I had a friend who raised both racing homers and modenas. He flew his Modena flock. Talk about nasty, wing slapping, squab scalping bistards - that was them.

Same friend flying his homers. Two weeks in a row one of his birds would have been the first on the clock, but he refused to trap in. Third week he bet the bird heavily (yeah fliers do that) and when it returned he shot it with a shotgun, clocked it in and won the pool. :th

Cheater!! :gig
Technically, it didn't trap in on its own though, so why did he win? :p

This was back in the era when a rubber band was applied to the bird at the club prior to the race. Then the birds remained under lock and key until taken to the release point and released. When birds trapped in bands were removed, placed in the clock, and somehow the time was recorded. He removed the band and followed the clocking behavior. I am out of the loop, but think that today there are chips and readers with results going directly to the club secretary.

You had to know Jim. He was old school, old school foxhound man. His feelings towards the value of any animal was directly proportional to how well it did competitively.
