I had to break the top layer of ice several times today.

What I do for all my bird's water, except for the emus because they have a stock tank, is I put buckets in heated dog bowls that I can buy on Amazon for $15. It works great. I have two smaller ones that I think would be perfect for the pigeon waterers, either by tucking them in like I do with the buckets or flipping the bowl over and setting it on the bottom.

That’s probably the best option for my bigger pen, but one of those won’t fit in the cage that the parlor rollers are in.

Break up the top layer of ice? I wish!! That was me 2 days ago when we were in the 20°s. Today it was a high of 5°, now -3° and the drinker froze solid on me twice. They seem fine on two drinks a day. I don't have elec in the loft and its only a few steps away to take them water.

Good to know, I have a heated dog bowl I used to use for the chickens. I thought it might work to keep the pidgeon water thawed if I want to run a cord to the loft. For now that seems too much trouble.

Mine isnt really a lot of trouble, but when I go to work, I hate the thought of it being frozen all day. I did watch a video a guy in MN said he carries out hot water, twice a day. They get to drink enough before it freezes back, twice a day, and he hasn’t had any problems with them.
He uses cut bottoms of milk jugs, maybe 3-4” deep. Easy to dump the ice out, and easily replaceable.

They don’t seem to mind the zero degrees nearly as much as I mind it.


And lookie back there in the nest bowl..... I should probably take it until I see another one? Unless she stays on it today, it will freeze. It’s only 3F now, our high today is 18F

Oooh great idea. I did buy some fake ones. I forgot about them!

I used to place them in a cotton filled shot glass.
