Pigeon Talk

I released my pigeons yesterday on a nice warm bright day at around 2:00 after not feeding them yesterday morning or the morning before.
I released them in a large open field a half mile from my house, two of them immediately took off and began circling and the other two sat on a telephone wire and wouldn't move. Eventually the two that did fly disappeared in the direction of my house and the other two on the wire just sat there for about thirty minutes. I managed to call the two that were sitting on the wire down and bring them home myself, but the other two never came home. Those two were my best birds and I am honestly shocked they didn't make it back. What did I do wrong?
Im so sorry! :(:hugs
Boomer has a special excemption permit!
:celebrate :wee :clap

I haven't given up yet, but I was hoping they'd be back by this morning. I have had the trap open since then with some feed inside. All of them can use the bob wires and when I let them out previously from home they almost always did fine coming back in.

They were a half mile away.
Sounds right to me. I think you did every thing right, and good on you for that. Even when you do everything right there can be losses.:(

It could be something has spooked them. Or something else. Do they have bands on registered to you incase they turn up somewhere?
Unfortunately not, from what I understand these birds were more or less accidents in the loft they were born in and as such the previous owner just banded them with bands he already said which confusingly said 2016. I will be keeping an eye out on craigslist and such though.

I hope you find them or they return home soon! :fl

Then if they are found the prev owner may be contacted and let you know. One of the birds I bought was like that with a band from a previous year.

I got them in the first week of October.
They've been let out many times from the loft yesterday was the first time I took them anywhere.
I would never give up hope on your birds I have had them return months after I had written them off. It is my experience that after 3 days if they have not returned chances are they are lost.
It is heartbreaking to loose birds as I can attest.

You done everything right in my opinion.

Your squeakers should only be imprinted to one loft and that should be yours.
Once you have been a fancier as long as I have you develop the attitude that it cost the same to feed a good bird as it does a poor one.
What really breaks your heart is when a predator such as a weasel gets into your loft and kills every one of your birds. I know that feeling as well.

On another NOTE

So even long timers can't always be sure
One thing that always stood me in good stead when it comes to sexing pigeons.

If it lays an egg it is FEMALE ♀!

Thanks for all the help everyone! :)
I'm happy to say that as of five minutes ago the two missing birds came home together. :ya
They fought some strong winds that started up this morning to get back, and they seem none worse for wear. I'm fairly certain that these two birds in particular are a male/female pair, or a bonded pair at the very least because they never leave each other's side.
