I think what I'll do is if she lays again I'll remove the egg. Wait see if she lays another and put them under mama2 and papa2. They are good parents.

It looks like you need more straw in the nest bowl. It gives more cushion and helps with the rougher birds. Through the years I also found one trick for the "heavy sitters" which like to break eggs... basically cover the bottom of the nest bowl with clay kitty litter and then they can carry in the straw on top (or you can add the straw on top if they are poor nest builders). Even if they push the straw out the eggs still have the litter on the bottom and it also gives the babies something to get a grip on so they don't get splay legs. But definitely get more nesting material in those bowls. This is the nest area and bowl. The egg was on the other side of the loft. They may be harmless, but they lays their eggs inside the grains and then their larva eat out the centers of the grains and you lose most of the nutrition value of the grains that way. But yes... definitely not desirable. Hope the freezing works for youAlright, I will go longer in the freezer. I found out what they are, rice weevils. They are pretty harmless, just not desirable. Thank you so much @biophiliac and @Old_Strain_Lover !
Yes, thank you! I did find one piece of hollowed out milo. They may be harmless, but they lays their eggs inside the grains and then their larva eat out the centers of the grains and you lose most of the nutrition value of the grains that way. Good deal.. I hope dh will be agreeable to putting a bottome and legs on it!We built a platform under mine too. I put a screen under half of it with a rabbit tray to pull out to clean. I Put the water and food over the tray. It worked great for messy ducklings. Lol
A lady that came and bought call ducklings from me yesterday has fantails (showed me some pics on her phone) she fell in love with my pigeons. She said she might want some when I get around to selling some. (Or we might trade some)![]()
Good job downsizing FMF!
That coop will make a great loft in the winter! You could raise it up with pallets if need be.
Its happened again. Ash's first two eggs got busted and thrown out the nest. She has layed again yesterday and I come home from work to find this egg had been busted too. It was on the opposite side of the loft. First time I could put it down to inexperience but twice and this soon after she layed it. I'm almost certain it is her pair that it doing it. What's happening? Has this happen to anybody before?
I don't have an aviary, but to save money, get treated landscaping timbers for the structural poles on the corners. Normally, you would want to get 4×4s but those are pricey. I would then get a bag of two of quickcrete concrete down in the ground around them, so they don't rot.@Old_Strain_Lover if you have any more pictures of your aviary would you be willing to share them here? I'm trying to build something pretty similar myself![]()
Leo and Chenoa are proud to announce the arrival of 2 live chicks.I'm embarrassed to admit they triumphed over my efforts to toss eggs.
I knew I had goofed up when I saw an empty shell in the farthest corner of the aviary from the loft. A good cockbird will make sure no shells are visible near the nest to attract predators. Leo is a good daddy and mate. He is twice widowed* and Chenoa is his third mate. So with this clutch he will have produced offspring with each of his mates.
