Pipd's Peeps!

Good morning! Hope all is well.

I saw Ivy go up into the rafters yesterday, so hauled out the ladder. But, there are no eggs up there at all. I think my oegb bantams are taking a break. Finally! I was worried that there was a stash. I had planned on checking more often, but got ill and with that, I had no strength to even clean like I normally do. So, it's been a few weeks since I last checked.

The other good news, it seems the roosters have settled enough that Rebel is allowed in the run without chaos. I know most is due to hormones and if he'd stay away from Lemon, he'd probably never get in trouble. 🤭

I have a question, do you think the oegb bantams are OK to roost in the rafters this winter? There is obviously wind blocks from the roof. So, that's not going to be an issue. I'm just worried, that it's too open and they won't huddle. I can shoo them down everyday, but I will be gone for a little over a week in Feb. Someone will come to check on them once per day, but it won't be at night. So, I'm almost certain they will be in the rafters during that time.

I need to get the winter set up started before it gets too cold and my fingers don't want to cooperate (gloves or no gloves).

How's everyone else?

More tax required! :wee

Whoops, I'm way behind on my taxes now

Your crazy birds and their rafter nesting! :th Good that it sounds like the OEGBs are not contributing to that at least!

Hope you feel better after your illness! :hugs

Oh, that is good! Hopefully they get along better come spring when the hormones kick up again :fl

Hmm, good question... I usually make sure my OEGB girls are well snugged in between fluffy birds in the coop during the winter, if not in temporary housing inside because they're tiny birdies with big eyes and I can't say no :duc But my OEGB boys tend to sleep in similarly open roosting areas and they do just fine, so maybe? I imagine it'll depend on the actual temps we're experiencing at that time, but it's pretty likely they'll do just fine if they're out of the wind!

I still need to get winterizing done, too, but I've just been so busy! A lot of my winterizing for the big coop never came down this year because it was helping with keeping spring rain out of the deck, and then it was sheltering broodies and youngsters, and by the time it stopped really being used for that it didn't seem like there was a point to taking it down because it would just go back up a few weeks later. But my other coops need winterized, especially rooster row since whatever-it-was came by and tore up all their tarps the one night during the summer. :barnie Just gotta find the time to get it done! This weekend's not going to be it, either--I've got two midterms to study for, an outline for a paper to write, job shadowing, and a presentation to prepare, all in this next week!

What's up in my neck of the woods? Well, I mentioned a lot of it in my last post--school work! :th I'm hunkering down and getting things finished right now while preparing for the additional work that will be the 8-week lab I have starting on Friday. We're half way through the semester, no time to slow down now!

Things are looking pretty good for my mom, by the way! All scans came back negative for any metastases. Her bone scan had one suspicious spot in it so they are doing an MRI next week just to be safe, but the radiologist does not think it's metastasis, most likely just a bone spur from her age. She will be going into chemotherapy for the next 3-4 months so things might get a bit rough with that. But, prognosis is good. I have no reason to believe she won't be around to see me graduate.

Back taxes for chicken pictures... Shoot, I hate to say it, but I think I'm quite short on those... I've been way busier than I ever anticipated and sort of got into the habit of getting the birds fed and watered in the morning and then taking off for school. I'll try to get back into the habit of actually taking pictures occasionally after this week so I can get to work paying off those taxes. 🤭

Anyway, here's all I have from the last two weeks I was absent.

Priscilla and Bella on a log with Duckling in the background. Prissy was looking up at me inquisitively because they had all been in the coop, but I entered their pen to get Gus III inside with them and the girls had to come back out to see what I was doing.

And I realized today that I hadn't really taken any pictures in a while so I grabbed this shot of Georgia, who is looking a lot fresher than she had been! 🤭

However, now Zoe, another occupant of the same pen, is... not looking so fresh. 😬 These gals are pretty all-or-nothing with their molts, I guess!

One last thing to add, sadly. Last Thursday, October 10th, I said goodbye to Endymion, miss Dym-Dym Dymothy herself, at the ripe old age of 8 years. After a bout of crop issues that came on with her molt, she aspirated on fluid she had regurgitated from her bloaty crop and passed away rather suddenly. Dym was not the brightest bulb in the box, but she was such an adventurer, and a beautiful and larger-than-life addition to my mixed flock. She and her gorgeous green eggs will be missed. This is one of the most recent pictures I took of her as part of my picture of the day project over the summer.

Keep up with the school work!

I'm looking at learning quick books so that I can go into book keeping.

I had a huge breakdown October 2nd / 3rd and I'm on leave from work at the moment. Sigh, I'm definitely bipolar. I was handling it on my own with out medication for about 20ys and now I can't seam to do that anymore after my dad's death. It got so bad I was having panic attacks just going out to take care of the chickens. 🫤

I hope I can keep my job but I'm not sure I will. We will see. Will probably be out another 4 to 6 weeks until meds are working.

The swings are pretty bad right now. While I'm looking forward to my appointment Monday I'm also terribly anxious as well.

Glad your mom is well. I was thinking about you today as I was taking a walk with my dogs and said a prayer for your mom. ❤️

I just love Zoe's face, she's saying this is not fun - don't touch me.

Sorry to hear about Dym-Dym. She definitely was beautiful. :hugs

I am so sorry Pipd, she was a gorgeous girl, she lived a good life with you, but I know whatever time we have with them is never quite enough :hugs
