New duck mommy 2021
Free Ranging
To stop the playing in the water dish if you take a plastic container ( I use small butter one to start then work my way to a bigger one until about 3 weeks then I let them have the regular wayI noticed Newt has had some wet poo on the fluff under his vent place and its been about 2 days now, I've tried to clean it off but it doesn't seem to go.
His butt is usually wet most of the time since he walks all in his water. I've checked his vent and he doesn't have pasty butt but is the wet poo on the fluff okay?
Cut a hole big enough for their heads so they can dunk to clear the eyes and nose but not get wet
This also helps to keep the brooder more dry
Mine are just 3 weeks now and I use a bigger bowl but set it in a littler box and the splashes go in there instead of the shavings
I also use shavings after week 2 but puppy pads the first 2 weeks so they don’t eat the shavings so young
Once I put out shavings I also provide grit
They need grit to digest anything they eat that is not the feed pellets
This includes grass , weeds , fruit , veggies anything you give them
I leave a grit in their pen and outside so they have access 24/7 to it
I find they absorb the poo much better and so easy to just clean the poo
I clean my brooder several times a day when they are in it 24/7. Now that they are outside all day I do it once a day
This keeps it dry for them
You can also start baths
I started mine at day 3
They would be diving under water already. I give them deep enough to lift their legs and swim but able to put they feet down to stand
5-10 mins in warm water. Then dry with paper towel. This absorbs Most of the water but still allows them to preen and start using the oil gland
It also helps to keep them clean
If he is having runny poo it could be drinking a lot of water as instinct is to be in water
Keeping the pen dry and allowing bath time helps to reduce them being wet to much.
How the other egg doing ?
