Hi pippin. im hatching eggs under my broody kathy and I was wondering if I could shut Her in to the nesting box on day 20? she is a very stubborn broody and would only sit on a nest if it was in the big coop. I made her a separate area in the coop. Now the reason I’m wondering if it would be ok to close her in is the nesting box is raised 40cm off the ground and Im worried the chicks will fall off the side of a ramp. Do you think she would be ok? Thank you.

She should be allowed to leave if she wants. You can add barriers around the ramp or place a board underneath in case they fall

thank you. If I screw the ramp in will it disturd her to much the eggs go in to lock down on saturday. What do you mean by board? should I check that they are hatching on day 21 and should I panic if I see her off the east at that time. Thank you so much.

If you have a wooden or plasic board you can raise it just below the ramp so if the chicks fall they can jump back up

I'm assuming hens will not need to be checked on when hatching. Was there ever a situation where you had to help a chick out of its shell of will the mother hen do that by itself?

No. I check every few hours because I'm impatient. The mama should do it all herself
