I so agree. SSS. Had to do that to a dog here. It killed 12 of my hens got away and then came back for more. Also I was wondering what SSS meant. Know I know. you learn so much on here

I wish there was a way to keep incompetent humans from having dogs. So sad that dogs have to suffer because they got stuck with people who do not properly care for them. Sometimes I wish I could SSS my neighbors and find their dogs a better family.

Scariest thing I see on this post and all comments is the guy with a rifle. Now that is scary, as it can easily shoot from 1/2 mile to 1 mile. He should be advised to not use a rifle for a job that calls for a shotgun.

Actually, considering that a human weilding a rifle will almost definitely be looking down at a dog, the bullet would probably hit dirt if it missed the dog. As long as there's not a home or other building, or people, behind the dog, a rifle should be pretty safe. You are right, though, that a shotgun would be ideal for the situation, but a well-placed .22 shot might actually do the job. Not the most humane rifle to use, though, unless you nail the dog in a vital area.

I have absolutely no tolerance for pitbulls. I had my daughter in a public park in the city and a pit bull tried to attack her. She was 4 years old. Fortunately, the punk owner gained control of the beastie before I shot it. Less than a mile from me, a woman was mauled to death by a pack of pitbulls . Yeah, I've heard it a thousand times, it's not the breed, it's the owners. The punk owner of the dog that tried to attack my child told me his dog was "harmless". I know a young woman who was bitten in the face by her brother in laws pitbull while she was petting it. It knew her and had been over at her house many times. If this animal that attacked your chickens has bitten someone( especially a child) , in my opinion, it needs to be destroyed. I agree with the idea of a shotgun vs. a rifle, shotguns are good, so is a bow and an arrow! JA

agreed. It is a terriers instinct to chase after prey, but it is NOT in a pits natural makeup to challenge a human. I've got 3 pitbulls myself.

Welcome to BYC Jack, I must agree with you, there are so many people through out the US that are bitten, mauled, hospitalized and or killed by these dogs, there's something in their brain that triggers them to do something like this and if not mistaken I think it's regarding their victims being defenseless during their times of feeling macho type dogs.

Some have excellent experience with them and others don't! Heck some states will just euthanize them upon their entering their shelters due to their bad raps. They will never lose this reputation in which they have gained by them selves.

I'll stick with german shepherds, they are more so loyal to their owners than most and although I have 2 mixed mutts right now I wouldn't trade them for the world.

As for these pit owners today they cannot by any means predict their dogs future what so ever because they are so uncertain due to being unpredictable and deemed the sweetest dog in the world!!

Challenging human must be in their nature, why would they challenge a child, one that's not much larger than them?

My sister keeps pit bulls. Well.....she has pit bulls. She KEEPS them apart from the other dogs. She was really into adopting this breed from the shelters. She adopted a blind one once....imagine the dangers with that scenario.

She came home one day to find that her blind adoptee had killed her cat...blood and fur all over the house. That dog found a new home pronto.

Now she has one that was adopted while young, raised around all her other dogs but must be kept by itself in another room because it always fights and injures the other dogs.

She is also a person who insists that all these pit bulls she adopts have these bad behaviours merely because they had "bad owners". She has had the one that she keeps separate from the rest for many a long year now.....when does she become the "bad owner"? Shouldn't one be able to train a dog out of some of these fighting and killing behaviours if they are merely a sweet, misunderstood breed that only seem to have "bad owners" when they misbehave?

Why can't it simply be a breed characteristic that they are aggressive towards other animals and sometimes people? That they perform like a gang when they are in a pack? Why is it always attributed towards a "bad owner"? Are there that many people out there taunting and beating this breed into aggression?

Not where I live. Where I live all the folks with that breed are treating them like babies and insisting they are lovable huggy bunnies that are just misunderstood and get a bad rap. Until one attacks someone or someone's pet...then all the other pit owners point their fingers and say, "It wasn't the dog's fault, he just had a bad owner!"

Sorry....that has been stewing in there for a long time and I just had to let it out~sort of like bad gas pains!

Didn't mean to go that far off topic!

IMO anyone who chooses to have a pitbull is out of their tiny mind. There are plenty of other breeds to choose from, but no they want the one that was created to be aggressive! It wouldn't hurt my feelings one bit if they went the way of the dodo.
