Actually American Pitt Bull Terrier is an actual a breed recognized by the UKC, not recognized by the AKC, but is a breed itself. The American Staffordshire Terrier is recognized by the AKC as is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. All of which in slang are referred to as "Pit Bulls" because all of the breeds have been used for fighting.
I would always keep an eye on him because even my two beagles (who never chased the chicks, also were never left unattended) killed and ATE a hen that flew into their huge pen. These aren't even hunting dogs, they are show dogs.......
I used to watch the Westminster Kennel Club dog shows that were on USA a few years ago, and they recognize the APBT as a breed as well.
They are only supposed to be around 45-55 pounds full grown, according to WKC, but people have been breeding them to be bigger.
Here's a link to the NKC's APBT breed standard...if you are interested.

However, looking at http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/americanpitbullterrier.html It does say that APBT and American Staffordshire are the same. (according to AKC)
But do socialize him. My dad has a pit, and he is aggressive towards dogs that are aggressive to him. Dad had (emphasis on had) a male beagle that would growl at Tank every time he came near, they were both on chains, so I guess dad thought it was no problem. Or he didn't care, who knows? Anyway, Tank somehow broke his chain on night and killed poor Jack the beagle. And dad still has Tank.
