Pit bulls- evil. Golden retrievers- BEST DOGS EVER!!! :D:D

Its too simple to blame the owner and not look at the breed of dog. Here in the UK the 'dangerous' dog breed in the media at the moment is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. This breed has been the cause of a much higher proportion of attacks than other breeds, and it can't all be down to bad owners. Same as pit bulls, they have been bred as fighting dogs, for aggression and strength.

In the UK dog fighting has died out now... I think its time to let the dangerous breeds also die out too.

Of course I am not talking about putting animals down or taking animals away from owners. I just think they should stop breeding them......any large dangerous dog breed, not just pits.

So long as these breeds exist, some people will abuse them and bring out the worst in them. Also accidents can happen even with the best trained dog. A smaller breed - like the Yorkshire terrier - may also be aggressive, but its going to do a lot less damage to a person than a pit bull. Also if you look at statistics you will see what dog breeds are involved in the most attacks..........

A 2009 report issued by DogsBite.org shows that 19 dog breeds contributed to 88 deaths in a recent 3-year period. Pit bulls accounted for 59% followed by rottweilers with 14%.
  • Of the 88 fatal dog attacks recorded by DogsBite.org, pit bull type dogs were responsible for 59% (52). This is equivalent to a pit bull killing a U.S. citizen every 21 days during this 3-year period.
  • The data also shows that pit bulls commit the vast majority of off-property attacks that result in death. Only 18% (16) of the attacks occurred off owner property, yet pit bulls were responsible for 81% (13).
1. We need to take into account breed population sizes. Do you know how many people own pitbulls? If we want to be realistic we should compare amount of attacks compared to the population size of the breed. I guarantee you the results would shed some light on the situation.

2. "Pit Bull Type" dogs? This is why so many attacks have been blamed on Pit Bulls. I can't tell you how many cases have been misidentified as a Pit attacking them. Many people assume a dog that slightly resembles a pit bull must be one. There are MANY breeds that look like pits bulls. If people accurately identified the breeds the number of "Pit Bull" attacks wouldn't be the number that is claimed to be.

don't believe anything you read in the media, they all have their own agenda to sell their papers..... and the best way to do this by creating a demon that'll grab everybody's attention everytime it's printed...

for example, a few summers ago they decide shark attacks in Australia is increasing exponentially... everybody was calling for a cull... and when somebody actually digs a little deeper, they found that the number is actually constant every year... just happens to be summer when more people is in the water..

another will be in NZ, every dog bite will be reported as pitbull attack is not even funny anymore... even when a jack russell nip (well rip is the right word) a kid's nose when the dog is clearly there the repoter ask the parents was it a pit bull type dog that attacked your child...

The truth is, it's easier to blame the breed rather than educate the masses on dog ownership.

I have a Australian cattle dog and she is wonderful! So smart ! I actually taught her to smile for a treat lol.... My old neighbors had 3 Pit Bulls and all three were great loving dogs. I was never scared of them and they never bit anyone. They would more or less lick you to death :)

Any dog can fall into the dangerous category. My doxies are all bark but no bite but I've met snappy ones. Chihuahuas also get bad training (or no training at all). I have met 1 truly nasty chihuahua mix, her owners thought she was a purebred and gave her everything. They spoiled her to death and when they tried getting her a stud the stud owner refused them when the dog bit her on the ankle. The dog's name was Autumn, and I was a neighbor to these people. What's even more disgusting is the fact they were keeping two cocker spaniels in their backyard for breeding and the male they used for breeding was a pup from the female. His tail grew long because they never docked the tails and only the Lord knows what on earth they were getting in the puppies, and all for cash. The female had litters and killed almost all her litters at birth except when my neighbors intervened a couple times. I tried telling them that it's the mother's natural instinct and to let her kill the pups because of multiple health risks her pups would inherit. They never once listened. And the poor dogs were almost never groomed either. They had no vaccinations at all. I wasn't allowed to contact animal control because my parents didn't want to cause trouble with them. I regret the decisions I made when I was a young child.
^^^ These kind of people should not have animals period. It's not only this family doing it but all over the world. Perhaps a pitbull sitting alone in a doggy prison waiting to get put down is the neglected pup from some family that paid all their attention to a yappy little rat. Humans are the monsters, not the dogs.

I think another aspect of the negative image pits get may be the fact that they can be frighteningly powerful dogs. If you take a dog that can chew and muscle its way out of a heavy duty dog crate people tend to get scared (if it can bite through iron and bend steel what could it do to me if it wanted?) What would most well trained/socialized pits do to you if they wanted? probably lick your face. But the fact remains they are a powerful dog and throughout history people will always fear and mistrust power. Many other strong dog breeds have been villainized throughout history as well, pit bulls just happen to be the latest on the list. As a whole I personally wouldn't own a pit bull not because of the bad wrap they get or that they are a bad dog or anything. They just don't fit my personality very well and I prefer a dog I can handle better size/strength wise. That being said individuals of a breed can differ from the breed standard, temperament wise, and if I liked an individual dog and it happened to be a pit bull that wouldn't deter me from considering adopting it.

You guys do selective breeding with your chickens. You take the best, the most pretty, the best layers, the best broody, etc.etc. and breed them on with a good rooster.

People that fight pit bulls do the same, they take the winners and breed them on. Unfortunally the trait they most like is the aggressiveness and stamina to bite, rip, kill the opponent. They breed the winner, they rid themselves of the loser by using them to train the others. (or cull the loser by using it as bait) Its a lucrative business BECAUSE of this (the time, power of the "winner") and its why so many thugs do it. Its an ugly truth.

The problem comes in when these powerful aggressive dogs get loose. Or when they get loose and breed with another dog in the neighborhood that's in heat. (those puppies have to go somewhere) (the situation of a dog like that excaping would be 50xs scarier than, lets say you're walking down the street and see a rotti with clipped tail and a demon cut on his ears and his looking at you like youre dinner)

(By the way, I have seen soo many people who have had their dog bite someone badly (stitches) and they say something like "He's never done that!! Oh my god I'm so sorry he's never bitten and drew blood when he bites playfully." ....duh... hello? A Bites a bite. It was a matter of time when it would and could turn much uglier.)

But you have to admit that even these types of dogs... the ones that are bred to be destructive have gotten there by LISTENING to their handlers. The humans have encouraged the behavior. They treat champions like gold. Feed them well,TRAIN them well, and give them opportunities to breed on. And so you double up on a ugly trait within the dog by interbreeding it with the champions sister.

Unfortunally ANY dog with the predisposition to be Aggressive will be Twice as hard to train NOT to be.
It is why its important when you go pick up a puppy to interact with the parents of said puppy, so you will get an Idea of how your puppy COULD be.

The rest is up to You.

By the way this is all IMHO.

I have owned Pitt Bulls, and Dobermans. I have had a couple not so great pitts. and I have had more than my share of nasty chihuahuas. I actually had a chihuahua that hated on of my pitts and would continuously bite his lips and ears until they were bloody messes. Right now Im taking care of my brothers Pitt bull. My Brother trained him to be aggressive to cats so he has to stay outside. And my brother takes him out for 10mile runs on his bicycle this dog has a lot of stamina and power.
He leaves my chickens alone and goes after the wild cats (or if he had half a chance MY cats its why he has to stay outside

)

By the way it speaks volumes of how self centered someone is when they cut their dogs ear just for the purpose of looking, cool, scary or intimidating, it makes my blood boil. And its selfish. My Brother is one of these crappy self centered egotistical idiots.

all of the things that you describe are the tactics of bad breeders and irresponsible owners. To use their actions to condemn the breed (and pit breeders as a whole) would be like calling to ban chickens. After all, hatcheries put rooster chicks in a giant blender. And factory farms shove them all into tiny cages and have to rip their little beaks off just to keep them from killing each other. And don't forget the people who buy cute little chicks at Easter and then dump them once the kids lose interest. Or have an uncleaned smelly coop attracting hordes of vermin in their backyard in the suburbs. After all, it happens frequently. Wouldn't it just be easier to wash our hands of the whole mess?

Also, cropping ears and docking tails started with an actual purpose. Now that some countries have banned them (especially docking tails) vets are finding that they are having to do amputation surgeries on adult dogs. Why? Because the dogs are bred for hunting or other activities and they break their tails a LOT. That is why the practice of docking started - because a few minutes of pain as a puppy is much easier than a very painful procedure as an adult. Have you seen an ear-cropping done by someone who knows what they are doing? The pups whimper and cry for a couple minutes but by the time you put them on the floor with mom they are paying no attention to it.

You mentioned rotties? you don't crop ears on a rottweiler. Now dobes have cropped ears - know why? Because they are bred to do protection work. In a fight the longer ears gave a handle for the bad guy to hold onto and try to over-power the dog. Also, in a fight ears are easily torn and cause a lot of pain and bleeding. Same goes for cropping ears on most terrier breeds - they are bred to hunt vermin and fight their way through tunnels and brush. Uncropped ears are an injury waiting to happen.

Who used Dogsbite.org as a source?
That site is a very biased site--against pit bull-type dogs ( including against dogs that aren't even pit bulls, but ''look'' like pit bulls).
Most of their ''information'' is highly inaccurate, and they only cite attacks of pit bulls, and dogs reported as pit bulls. They do not take into account the number of pit bulls compared to other breeds, they bundle multiple breeds into the category of ''pit bull'', and never look at the other side of things.
Please, please, please DON'T use that as a source.
