I followed a bit of a thread where a hen has an open neck wound (much worse than this) and she survived so that's given me more hope.

Honestly, that doesn't look bad at all. I have seen way worse.

I had a hen with half her side muscle torn off and her shoulders gashed from a husky attack. I left her outside, squirted a little Vetericyn on it a few times a day, and she was just fine. Had a bit of a limp but that's it. There was another hen involved with just back wounds; she was fine too.

Good luck. Keep it moist & clean and she will be just fine.

My goodness, so much about oregano oil. I really think that she will do well, just with cleaning the wound, applying plain neosporin ointment twice a day, and by offering her good food and plenty of water to drink. Azygous had plenty of good info early in this thread on cleaning the wound and caring for her. Chickens will eagerly take wet chicken feed, chopped egg or rinsed tuna for extra protein. Hold a small measuring spoon to ner beak to get her to drink often, and keep spoiling her.
