When I was little we had LOTS of parakeets. My sister, brother & myself found a lady up the street going out of business with her parakeets, so we just kept going back and getting more! We ended up with 12 birds. My mother was so patient. They do have a lot of powder on their bodies which they shed off, and they molt a couple times a yr. so feathers then. They can be messy if you don't put a seed cloth outside the cage to catch the seed they throw all over. We loved ours. Several talked after we taught them (only males talk). Can be great pets. Now I'm all grown up... and have cockatiels, African grey & goffin cockatoo. Lots of noise in this house (sometimes too much!) ha Good luck.

When I was younger, I somehow managed to catch 3 parakeets (and one cockateal (sp?) ) in our back yard. I REALLY blew my mom's mind with what I caught, found, and followed me home. Each one was tame and very pretty... I never could tell the female from the male with these. UNTIL...

I ended up with one building a nest.... and next thing I know *chirp* they hatched! I ended up with 3 babies.

We finally gave them all away because another nest popped up... we separated them all, and then 3 more babies. I had cages everywhere!!!

I would just say watch their instincts when you get them. Get an odd number and you will most likely end up with at least one female. Give them a place to build their nest at (pet stores sell nesting boxes for parakeets!) and then just watch.

I have a Pair, the female just laid an egg today in the nesting box.
The Male has blue above his beak where the nostrils are and the female has white. That is how I was told the difference.

female creers (spelling??) are brown, pinkish, light blue or whitish. males are more a mid to darker blue. My four are incredibly loud. Obnoxiously so...at least to my ear. Other people like the "racket". I have a male and three females.

I raised them in the thousands years ago.

First best to have at least 3 pairs.

Sex them if they are older than 3 months. male cere (area above the beak) are dark blue except a few colors. females will be white or tan.

The cere does not show blue , in colors like Albino, Lutino,Fallow, and Harlequln.

Need to be 1 year old before breeding.

Young birds have barring feathers on their forehead area, after 6 month that area become sold color. Samething some color like white and lutino. dont have the barring.

Wood nesting box NO nesting materal.

One neat thing about parakeets, if you get a young male like 5 weeks. They make great talkers. But no other birds can be in the house.

Sold many young males, people was always telling how well they Talked. Secret is young MALES(female dont talk) and NO other birds around untill they learn to talk.

Also ones they start breeding let them have 2 batches then remove the nest box. They will keep breeding, lay eggs before the first batch leaves the nest.

They lay a egg every other day. but start setting after the first egg. So they have babies more than a week apart in the nest box at the same time
