Please Read! Bromethrin Rat Poison Warning!

Oh my gods, I am so sorry to hear this happened to you. It,does indeed sound like a living nightmare. I am glad you are here sharing your grief, everyone on here is an avid animal lover and it’s the best place for you to get the support you need. What an awful thing to go through. My heart goes out to you and yours. I will be keeping you in my thoughts.

What a tragic story. So sorry. Learning all this about poisons is scary and useful to me. My neighbor wanted me to use poison bait for whatever killed our chickens recently, but I was unwilling to consider it because of how many other animals might eat it. Now I learn how it persists through the food chain--that's even scarier!

Our beloved cat disappeared last month. I left no stone unturned trying to locate him. He had a chip AND a collar with ID. Eventually, not finding him in a ditch or getting a call from anyone, I assumed he was killed by a predator. But this story raises other tragic possibilities.

That's a good point, my neighbor still isn't happy over having to pay for my chickens his dog killed last Thursday. I might politely ask if he's had any poison on his place recently.
You have got to be joking! You just lost chickens to your neighbors dog? Oh honey, this has been one heck of a month for you. I hope that jerk didn’t kill your cats, that is just too horrific to even contemplate.

I've had a blind hen for a year now, she's been acting fine (except for the fact she's blind) and nothing seemed wrong other than her beak had started to overgrow.
I've had this cat since last July. Very friendly and seemed plump and healthy as usual.
This morning I walk outside to do chores, and the cat was laying dead in its favorite sleeping spot. It was still drooling when I found it, but it was definitely dead. Rigor had just begun to set in.
I go in my chicken house, my blind hen was dead in her favorite spot, the odd thing is she had died sitting up, I thought she was sleeping. Sadly she wasn't.
Currently I'm missing another cat who's about 1 and a half years old. I haven't found anything yet.

I know this is the dumbest question, as cats and birds are not even related at all, but are there any diseases that can kill a cat and hen in a matter of 12 hours with no side effects? Has anyone ever experienced this? Both animals were perfectly fine yesterday. I am not doing a necropsy on either one, the vets office is closed today and I will be gone the rest of the week. Horrible timing for everything.
This is probably just a heartbreaking coincidence, I just want to be sure. My hen was exposed to my entire flock and chicks, so I'm slightly concerned about them.
This is really disgusting so sorry about the following sentence, but you know how when animals die they pass stool? Neither the cat or chicken did, their bodies and deathbeds were perfectly clean. Except for the cat's drool....
So very sorry for your loss HuskerHen18. Sending BIG :hugs

Thank you SO MUCH everyone, for your loving hugs and support. I got up this morning and two cats are still okay, they're acting a little slow, but it's a gloomy day and my goats are doing the same. The two other cats haven't made an appearance yet, I'm heading outside to do chicken chores and look for them. Those two in particular like to leave the property to hunt, so this isn't unusual.
It was indeed my poison, I discovered vomit on the opposite side of my house. It was the exact same kind I had set in the pool shed. It wasn't fresh, so I'm assuming it came from one of the poor babies who passed yesterday.
This is just my personal observation, not a scientific one, but this bromethrin poison must have a strong scent that cats like. The more I thought about it, the cats have never been inside the pool shed, nor have they shown interest. Yet, when that horrible storm blew in and got that window open, the cats flocked in there at roughly the same time, as their symptoms appeared mere hours apart. How would they have known the window was open, unless they smelled something "irresistible"? I know my cats have a good sense of smell, if I throw eggs out on the opposite side of the property and the wind is in their favor, they all run to find the eggs within thirty seconds, even if they didn't know I was out there.
I guess my point is, not only is this bromethrin 100% lethal, pets are flat out attracted to it. That would make sense, the window is facing AWAY from the house, but if something smelled like food, of course they'd go investigate. Plus, on top of that, they knew an awful hailstorm was on its way! To them, the pool shed was shelter AND a buffet of something "good". They most likely never left until they'd eaten their fill of poison and the storm passed.
I pray I don't lose any more cats, if these last four survive, it would make more sense. The four that died were kittens, about a year and a half at most. They probably waited until last minute to seek shelter. Whereas, these four living cats are about five years old, they probably sought out shelter in the big barns long before the storm appeared. We'll see what these final 24 hours tell.
