Please tell me I got a Hen:( Otherwise see trade post that will follow...

Blood line might be different circumstances?

This is a major factor when determining gender with barred birds. Most hatcheries maintain lines that are easy to ID via lighter males and darker females. However, if they are not maintained for this, and sloppy crossing happens, you can completely lose this useful tool.

Your male does have the darker coloration, but it is clearly developing signs of a rooster. I'm sorry :(

Thanks! I really like this bird the most. So non agressive and meek:) I will give him more time and watch him but if he ever let's out a too call that will be it:( I plan on trying to trade him for a hen around the same age but we will see.

I don't want to give him to someone that will kill him and not care about him so I would do it but I don't want to.

I hope a can trade him or give him to someone that is just going to breed him.

I understand completely about wanting to rehome to a loving home if that's necessary. We are permitted to have hens and roosters in our city. We do have an excessive "barking, howling, or crowing" ordinance, however. I have two little banty cockerels of which I'm very fond. (being sensitive to my surrounding neighbors, I bring my four li'l bantams into a well-suited, chicken-friendly utility room every morning from 6:00 AM - 8:00 AM. That pair crow their tails off in unison! It's a hoot! ...nothing like eating breakfast and sipping the morning cup of coffee with the hubby to an indoor chorus of crows!! (and it doesn't disturb my teenagers in the least - go figure)

I hope for your sake that this sweet chick is a girl. -does look like a precious little boy to me, though....

That's a shame you cant keep him :( . I also vote roo as well. Just based on that big red comb. My barred rock pullets developed larger, redder combs than my other breeds the same age. But they weren't as large as that one in the pic at that age. Just wait and see! You never know...

Mat..... I'm in Long Beach and we're not allowed any crowers either. Having only mild trouble rehoming the roos I've hatched this spring. But.... have a few wee hens that may go nicely in your flock, all around the same age if you're interested!!

PM me if you think you'd like to take a look...... BTW.... I'm in agreement, roo. And I know virtually nothing about much at all.

Have a blue Copper Marans that's finding his way to a new home tomorrow and a few more that will be on their way soon...... darling wee boys that they are will cause nothing but broken hearts I'm sure.

I've had a lot of luck with Craigslist for re-homing. Just put a thoughtful or humorous post there, and make your intentions clear. I put up a singles add for my little studmuffin, and I had people contacting me for months wanting him. Here's the ad I posted:

"I am a hybrid 6 week old rooster looking for a bevy of fine young hens to romance and protect.

My interests include:

long walks in the yard
fine dining
keeping a good appearance (I am a city man after all)
dancing/strutting (very into the arts)
singing

Please give me a try ladies, I promise not to disappoint. My mother would love to keep me, but I find her house in the city to be too stifling for a manly shooting star such as myself. I may look a little ragged now, but I should finish coloring into a soft white body with a beautiful gold to champagne colored saddle and hackles.

Dont I sound handsome?"
