Cool, so I can actually make it a project to work on. Thanks. Another question. I used my spash Orp to get a blue gene in the BR. Once I get a few males and breed back to my 2 BR hens and start working towards it, how many gens will it take to get back to a "pure" Rock? Or is it possible. The one BR/Orp mix I hatched is a pullet, no barring and has the yellow/black washed legs. I have not looked too closely at skin color yet.

Remember, "Plymouth Rock" (or Orpington, or Rhode Island, or Sussex, or whatever) is all about the "type". Not knowing the quality of Plymouth Rocks you used, nor the "type" on the Orpingtons you used, its impossible to say when you will have a pure Rock again

Do you have a copy of the SOP to refer to so that you know what "Plymouth Rock" is supposed to look like per the standard?

In your cross did you use an Orpington cock/cockerel over a Barred Plymouth Rock pullet/hen, or vice versa? The reason I ask is that the barring gene in Plymouth Rocks is sex linked. Since your pullet is not expressing any barring, I would assume you used an Orpington Cock/erel and a barred pullet/hen. The offspring should be carrying 1 copy of the barring gene.

My suggestion would be to breed your splash orpingtonxbarred rock pullet to the BEST barred rock male you can find if you are trying to accomplish "blue barred"

If my assumptions are incorrect, let me know what you crossed and I will see if I can help you from there.

In all seriousness, you should consider getting an SOP so you know what you are working toward in Plymouth Rock type

Quote: Yes, it is Orp cockerel over BR hen. The Orp is BQ(50% HincJC English line and 50% American, can't remember breeder name) and the BR is HQ. I am just wanting to play at this point. If I like results from my birds, then I will get BQ Blue Rock and BR. That way I know I will have right type and can work the barring and color to breed true. I am still learning the whole genetics thing, I am getting Silkies in 2 days that will kick start that breeding program(from Marge Best). But I love the temperment and dual purpose of the Rocks and think eventually that this would be a good second breed to work with. I was shocked when my BR went broody at 6.5 months old, I figured one of my BO's would do that first.

Breed your "blue" pullet to a barred cock/erel and you "should" get a mix of blue/black barred birds.

Let me interject here..... All the roos you hatched are carrying only one copy of the barring gene (they are a sexlinked cross the way you breed them). You could use those roos over BR pullets. You will get 100% barred pullets, 50% single barred roos and 50% double barred.... KEEP the Double barred roos. They will look much whiter than the single barred roos. Pick the best Blue Double Barred Roo, and keep breeding to the best BR pullets you can. If you breed blue and black you will get 50/50 in color.

I am in my 3rd generation of Blue Barred Rocks. Next year they should have great barring. My 3rd gen pullets are getting some nice barring this time.

Here is a link to some that someone else hatched from my eggs if you want to see some chicks... well roos anyway LOL

Can you post a pic of those pullets?? I'm not sure I want to go as far as you have with the line. I am really happy with the 1st generation of blues I have gotten. They have terrific lacing from the GS barred birds.....but....I've never seen a blue barred pullet, and only single barred cockerels........stan

Quote: She is from my first crosses. I will try to get pics of the newer pullets that are not laying yet. The barring is looking much better. The double barred roos are going to look much better don't you think? Those roos in the link are double barred with pretty good barring too.

Wounder why the GSBR are putting lacing on the blues? Hum......

I have another project of Rocks.... when they grow out some I might keep a roo from that cross to seek that will put some lacing in the blues. They had tiny spots on their heads, but they are not barred really so we will see, maybe it will put some lacing on them.

Fast feathering cuckoo pattern? I have hatched out a good many half breed BRs and a lot of the pullets have had the blue hue/grey with darker blue lacing (somewhat of a mottled look sometimes)?. I never went anywhere with any of these as they were just run of the mill barnyard crop-outs from either rogue broodiess or just a hodgepodge clutches of eggs I stuck in broodies nest. I have a EE running out there now that has this color pattern she just mysteriously popped up out of the 'blue' LOL

O.K., thanks. I have to go take some pics now, all of my first generation pullets have lacing and all of the cockerels are barred. I thought that is what you are supposed to get with a splash over barred?? The splash cockerel came from Halo. I thought your blues were from her too?? ......stan
