Plymouth Rocks or Buff Orpingtons

I have both and my BR's are the best. They fly up on my shoulder to be petted and they just love me. They have big eggs and lay everyday. My BOs, lay smaller eggs and some lay everyday. They are not as friendly at all as my BR's. I got my BO's because everyone said they were extremely friendly.

One thing that might have something to do with it, is that the BO's had a roo and the BR's didn't. The BO roo is gone now but they aren't any friendlier.

BR's are my choice.

I'm new to chicken raising, and I don't have any Barred Rocks. Just Buff Orpingtons and Rhode Island Reds.

So I can't give you an educated opinion on the Rocks vs. the Buffs.

HOWEVER, I can tell you that I am very happy with my Buff Orpingtons. They are more friendly than the Rhode Island Reds, and lay very nice eggs. Truth is, I prefer my Buffs to my Reds.

I will probably get more Buffs next year.

The votes have slowed way down buty its good to get some new votes. The new tally is....

Buff Orpingtons - 18
Barred Plymouth Rocks - 18

A second or, God forbid, a 3rd coop is currently out of the question. I may have the room if I really looked for it, but I certainly don't have the time for 2 or 3.

At 18 votes for each I guess I can't really go wrong with either one, but keep them coming.

Sorry haven't checked in a while.

To answer yoker's question, the coop is 8x5 and the run is 15x20 attached to a vegetable garden area that is 25x40. Some rather bad pictures are attached to my blog page listed below.

And the BR's have eeked out a small lead.

Buff Orpington - 18
Barred Plymouth Rocks - 19

WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I was thinking about using my husbands computer and re-registering just so I could vote again....................

Well , in my opinion only , if its egg producers you want , then take some friendly advice .... We started off with 30 - 1 week old chicks ... Black austolorps , barred rocks and Rhode Island Reds .... THESE are very good layers except they did not lay until 8 months old . So , in my opinion , we prefer to buy pullets closer to laying age then to have to feed and care for them for 8 months and hold our breath praying they would finally start laying .... NO MORE BABY CHICKS FOR US .
We even had 2 of our hens go broody and hatched beautiful chicks for us this summer , but prefer to buy older pullets .

We went and bought 25 Buff Orpingtons that had just started laying . and we love them all ....

Our flock of mixed breeds are really coming on strong now with beautiful brown eggs .

We are partial to the buff Orpingtons . The barred rocks lay huge eggs as well ... measured several that were close to 4 inches long and double yolkers .... In my opinion , ALL of these large breeds lay well and easy to handle .
