Hi all,

This chick finally emerged. (Pipped early afternoon end Day 23, pointy end of egg, no further progress whatsoever, cheeping fading, ended up with a fully assisted hatch early Day 25, dried membrane, yolk sac fully absorbed, head between thighs). 15 hours later, seems perfectly healthy so far. Fingers crossed.

It's from my black Polish bantam. I'd had her several days; apparently she'd previously been with an apricot Houdan roo before I took her, and laid an egg. I succombed to curiosity and popped it in the incubator. The previous owner says all her offspring have turned out white and I'm assuming this little pale yellow chick will do the same.

However - this chick has four toes, and feathered legs/feet. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance.

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking, it sounds like you already know the cross?

Hi @Pyxis

Thanks for the response. I know what cross it is supposed to be, but I have only their word for it and I didn't think either Houdans or Polish had feathered legs? It's definitely from my Polish, but I'm confused by the feathered legs.

Oh, you're right! No, they don't. Perhaps they have a crevecour and think that it's a houdan? Definitely polish in there with the crest. I'd say maybe part sultan because of the white color, but then I would expect it to have inherited the extra toes too.

Thank you! I had to look up Crevecoeur... I see how they could be confused. I know there are a few Houdan breeders around here, but I've never seen Crevecoeur in this area (central Australia). I looked at Sultans too - but yes, definitely only 4 toes on this little one. I'm no good with genetics - and I guess at the end of the day, people sell birds in good faith that might look like a particular breed but if we could look into the past, who knows what we'd find mixed in. I suppose it doesn't matter at the end of the day, just that I'm one of those annoying people who like to know the whys and wherefores and I do wish people wouldn't do it! Sigh! (Grumpy old woman today!) LOL

I agree.

I have many Houdan’s and that is definitely a quality. Not overwhelming feathers but they are there. This post is old but, hopefully someone at sometime will find this helpful 😊
