Poll!! Am I being unfairly mean??

A chronic health issue, be it physical or mental, is not a "get out of jail free" card when it comes to being a productive member of society. It is not a lack of compassion, but rather an expectation that people will grow up. The OP is allowing her son and DIL to live in her house for very little rent. The trade off should be such gratitude that the son and DIL are taking care of all sorts of household chores, especially since DIL is not working and OP is working overtime. Mental illness or no mental illness the DIL should be expressing gratitude for being allowed to live in a nice house for very little money. Respect works both ways. Clearly the DIL does not deserve respect. That has nothing to do with her mental illness and everything to do with a wrongful sense of entitlement.
I hate when people use physical or mental limitations as an excuse. I too have a serious, chronic health issue that routinely makes me sick as a dog. I too hate taking the meds, but I do it anyway as I know I cannot function when my body is falling apart. Despite this wretched disease (with the side effect of extreme fatigue) I still somehow manage to take care of my house, my animals AND hold down multiple jobs. While my parents would happily help me out if I needed it, it is not their responsibility to house me or feed me. I am now a grown up and it is my own responsibility. That DIL needs to suck it up and become an adult. The son needs to suck it up and take responsibility for his family. The OP has full right to limit the use of any part of her house that she chooses. Son and DIL should be grateful to just have a roof over their heads.

Bi-polar is NEVER an excuse for rudeness....never. Sorry that dosent fly with me. She wont take her meds, and TRY to get better...and shes a mother. That says it all for me right there.. She says she has a mental disorder but wont take her meds for it..
