Pomeranian Goose Breed Thread

Pics
Hi guys! I am looking for some opinions... I am thinking of ordering about 10 "show quality" goslings from Strombergs. Poms of course. Maybe half grey and half buff. Has anyone bought from them and had a good experience with goslings? They are pricy so I was hoping for some feed back before I ordered... When I talked to them about ordering the lady made it sound like they were out sourcing from a reputable breeder.

Also, for those of you with buffs and greys does it matter if you let them all run together and just hatch whatever color goslings pop out? Could some one please give me a clue as to the color genetics in these guys?

Thanks!

Stromberg's is a middle man and does not raise or breed the geese themselves. I can't remember, but I seem to think they may get their stock from Urch/Turnland Poultry. I can hook you up with a couple breeders (if you have Facebook) that sell either eggs or goslings: Most have a minimum order of 6 goslings. PM me your facebook information and I will friend you there and direct you to the folks I think could help you.

Also, just because goslings are labeled as SQ, does not mean you will get show birds when the grow up: You are just getting a much higher chance that they will be to SOP and of high quality. Personally, I would not buy from stock I could not see multiple photos of in advance unless they were a HIGHLY respected breeder like Holderread (who doesn't sell Poms anymore).

Other than OregonBlues on here, most of the rest of us have flocks that are "works in progress". Meaning, we have everything from pet quality to show quality and all the grades in between. Lots of us are working on breeding toward the SOP, but are just too new to the process to have made much headway. Take my flock for example. Out of 14 Buff Poms, I have two that would do well in a show ring and 4 approaching the quality needed. The others all have varied issues that range from minor to major. So, this year I have ordered 6 goslings and nearly two dozen eggs from 4 different flocks. Plus, I will be hatching at least 6-8 eggs from each of my pairs all in hopes of getting enough stock to work with next season.

As to having both Buff and Gray here is what you need to know...
Buff is a sexlinked recessive gene in geese.
If you mate a buff gander to a grey female you should get 100% buff females and 100% grey males.
If you mate a grey gander (not carrying buff) to a buff female you should get 100% grey offspring, but the males are carrying the buff gene. If you mate them to a grey female you should get 50% buff females. Mating a split to buff male to a buff female will result in buff offspring, but I am not sure if it is 100%...I think it is.

A female always shows the buff gene if she has it (unless she is white), a male can be a carrier while not showing it.

Hope this helps a little and good luck with your geese. Make sure to post photos when you get them!

Is this a Pomeranian goose? If so, can you tell its gender? If not, what is it? Thanks y'all.

Wow, that is one gorgeous blue saddleback you have there. The bill/ leg coloration and markings look about right. Are the eyes blue (they look it in the picture) and how many lobes does it have (fat between legs)?

I have seen birds like this that one breeder in particular is trying to create. Another poster on here had one of these thrown from her gray saddlebacks at one point too, so they are possible.

To me, just from the photo, I would say female. The bill looks feminine to me.

We'll see if the others weigh in and see what opinions they have to offer. Either way, that is one beautiful goose! Congratulations!

Mrs. Magoo, I am seriously thinking about adding Pomeranians to my gaggle. They really catch my eye. I need to get to work on more goose pens! LOL

Aspen,

You are too funny. We all knew you would catch the bug and be drawn to the Pom side!

Let me know when you are ready and I'll see if I can rustle you up some eggs, or goslings. Everyone is starting to sell out: I just had a man order 15-20 goslings a few minutes ago and have already have the first 40 eggs reserved. If you want some for this year though, I will find a way to get you some. Either from my birds, or I know some people that have them up North and may still be able to get you some from good looking parent stock.

hi everyone,

i wanted to share a picture of my geese. a friend gave them to us last summer. she told me that one of them was a pomeranian. looking at pictures of pomeranians, she definitely looks like one, but there seems to also be some slight differences. i was wondering if you could take a look and tell me if you think she is a pure pomeranian or maybe a cross? i couldn't find a picture of her out of the water, hopefully you can see her well enough in this picture.

First, welcome to the Pomeranian thread! We are glad you posted and shared your picture.

I know exactly which one you are talking about: She is in the back. I would say that goose is definitely a cross.

Does she have a darker coloration on the back of her neck? It is hard to tell from the photo. It also looks like the body has gray and the head more of the buff, or is that just the photo? Also, how many lobes (fat hanging between their legs) does she have and what color are her eyes?

It is entirely possible for a goose to be a Saddleback and not have any Pomeranian in them at all. However, their are certain attributes that would point to Pomeranian heritage: Blue eyes, single lobe, medium size, etc.

Either way, that is a very nice group of geese you have there. Enjoy them!

thank you for answering so quickly!
the back of her neck is darker than the rest of the head and neck. her body is white, and the grey on her wings & back somewhat matches the grey on her head. and she has blue eyes. i tried to google what the lobes were and couldn't really figure out what that meant.. if this relates to whether the underside is all one pouch, or seems to be separated into two pouches, then i would say she only has one.
here is another picture of her i took a few weeks ago. her name is Nellie

I don't claim to be a Pomeranian expert but definitely a cross. You can see a rudimentary knob at the base of the bill. Definitely half African or Chinese. You can also tell by the color on the neck. you can see the dark russet stripe on the back of the neck, just like a brown African or Chinese
