Hi guys! I am looking for some opinions... I am thinking of ordering about 10 "show quality" goslings from Strombergs. Poms of course. Maybe half grey and half buff. Has anyone bought from them and had a good experience with goslings? They are pricy so I was hoping for some feed back before I ordered... When I talked to them about ordering the lady made it sound like they were out sourcing from a reputable breeder.
Also, for those of you with buffs and greys does it matter if you let them all run together and just hatch whatever color goslings pop out? Could some one please give me a clue as to the color genetics in these guys?
Thanks!
Stromberg's is a middle man and does not raise or breed the geese themselves. I can't remember, but I seem to think they may get their stock from Urch/Turnland Poultry. I can hook you up with a couple breeders (if you have Facebook) that sell either eggs or goslings: Most have a minimum order of 6 goslings. PM me your facebook information and I will friend you there and direct you to the folks I think could help you.
Also, just because goslings are labeled as SQ, does not mean you will get show birds when the grow up: You are just getting a much higher chance that they will be to SOP and of high quality. Personally, I would not buy from stock I could not see multiple photos of in advance unless they were a HIGHLY respected breeder like Holderread (who doesn't sell Poms anymore).
Other than OregonBlues on here, most of the rest of us have flocks that are "works in progress". Meaning, we have everything from pet quality to show quality and all the grades in between. Lots of us are working on breeding toward the SOP, but are just too new to the process to have made much headway. Take my flock for example. Out of 14 Buff Poms, I have two that would do well in a show ring and 4 approaching the quality needed. The others all have varied issues that range from minor to major. So, this year I have ordered 6 goslings and nearly two dozen eggs from 4 different flocks. Plus, I will be hatching at least 6-8 eggs from each of my pairs all in hopes of getting enough stock to work with next season.
As to having both Buff and Gray here is what you need to know...
Buff is a sexlinked recessive gene in geese.
If you mate a buff gander to a grey female you should get 100% buff females and 100% grey males.
If you mate a grey gander (not carrying buff) to a buff female you should get 100% grey offspring, but the males are carrying the buff gene. If you mate them to a grey female you should get 50% buff females. Mating a split to buff male to a buff female will result in buff offspring, but I am not sure if it is 100%...I think it is.
A female always shows the buff gene if she has it (unless she is white), a male can be a carrier while not showing it.
Hope this helps a little and good luck with your geese. Make sure to post photos when you get them!
