i'm going to try a combination.. some where else .. they linked to the manufactur.. and they do the same with kitty litter..New to the chicken thing myself. thanks for all the info. i have read the benefits of sand, and i thought it was the way to go. but now i think PDZ sounds like the way to go. i did not read all pages, but the ones i did had no ill effects. i will have a small "tractor" type coop and the floor will be PDZ powder covered!!
nice coop. if i had this coop i would put a roosting bar from one side to the other and nail it from the out side to hold it in place, then put the PDZ in one of those seed trays, under it. for clean up i would remove the tray or just scoop it out. if you place the PDZ on the floor of your coop that should not be a problem ether. just make a 'lip' so it dose not fall out when you open the coop.I can't believe I read the first 17 pages of this thread! I have to stop now because I don't have the time to read 60 pages more!
I'm a first time chicken person. We got our chicks 16 days ago (3 ISA Browns, 1 bantam & 1 Arucana (Easter-egger)). I'm building our coop now. Here are the plans (see below). It's 4'x4' with 4' high front wall and 3 1/2' high back wall. The nest box will be in the back wall external to the coop.
I'm going to do the poop board under the roost, but the board will have to be on the floor of the coop. I'll build 4" sides all around to keep the PDZ inside and the bedding out.
PDZ sells for $9.99/25 lbs at Tractor Supply and $14.99/40 lbs at Family Farm & Home. So FF&H is a better deal by 2-cents per lb, but I wonder how much I will really need???
Most important how do you store it so that humidity in the summer doesn't make it wet?
Here are some pics of my coop (in progress)

i don't see any problems with the PDZ beening on the floor of the coops like jimmywalt. but i don't think i put it on the floor of a 'walk-in' coop. i like the poop broads because most of the poop is on it and not the floor. i hate DL (deep litter) because you have to walk on old poop,
i heard bad things about using kitty litter. the chickens will eat it and get sick. (does anyone esle know about it)
I was actually headed out to do some finishing touch work on the coop before they go out this weekend - I've got the extra lumber and boards to do this. SO much easier and cleaner than what I'd had planned for ours - with 30 birds this is ingenious!!!
Gorgeous coop layout, Trish. So simple and functional - and pretty at the same time!
I'm going into town tonight to get our fence supplies for tomorrow's pasture project - will get the bag of sweet PDZ along with the other supplies!
THANK YOU for sharing this with us!
Do the chickens eat the Sweet PDZ? And would they roost on the edge of the lip and poop on the floor? I'm trying to think of a way to do something like this. Keep going back and forth between a pit on the floor and a board under the roosts. My chickens are in a coop that my friend has (we share). It's not very big inside but we have 8 chickens so it should be fine for them (they haven't gone out yet, they're still too young).
