Poor George Graphic

What a wonderful narrative. Here's to you and George!!! Keep us posted-please.

It sounds like you have done a really great job with him. Maybe when George is all healed up, he can be friends with Blu, my one-legged boy.

He got a major infection in his right ankle. He had to have surgery to remove it, and it ate into his tendons. He has some motion in the leg, but he mostly uses it for balance or for a little stability when he jumps. And he can still jump-

And perch...

And he can- hey! Get out of my bed! That is not yours, Blu...

Well ok... but just for a little bit.

Anyway, I'm sure that George will be grateful for any extra time you have given him. If you want to talk about it, or about the ways Blu and I have handled things, please feel free to message me any time. Just like I am sure you are doing, we are taking it day by day, and you have already done a wonderful job.

How wonderful to see another one-legged peacock. While he's not a pet like your's George does seem to be adapting to his new physical challenge. Your photos give me hope. Thank you.

Happy to help! I actually have more photos and videos of Blu from this summer, a year after his surgery. He's a lot less of a mess now than he was in those pics, and still only rarely "uses" his leg. I'll get them off my camera after work, along with some of the stuff from the pen (like his perches).

And he's always the first one with his nose in trouble (so much so we had to move the turkeys out because HE was bullying THEM!).

Too funny! What in the world were those two turkeys arguing about? Interesting how Blu swings his damaged leg.

That bird is so, so lucky to have you!

It sounds like George isn't giving up, so you shouldn't give up on him. I have no peafowl experience, but I have seen other birds recover from pretty gruesome injuries. I'm hoping that his name isn't "coming home to roost" for him (the Broody Magician has a nose for trouble, have you noticed?) Prayers and positive thoughts for your handsome boy!

I asked on the turkey forums after separating them. Apparently they were sorting out their hierarchy... who knew!

And yeah... he "uses" it, like swings it like he's walking, but it doesn't bear weight. I'm hoping, once I get some time, to work on designing a prosthetic. I work with research animals for a living, so I'm surrounded by people doing all manner of research and specifically a friend of mine is shortly going to be starting with a lab that is doing research with neural prosthetics... so we'll see if in a year or two we can't get Blu walking on all two legs again!

Have some more hopping about in the sunshine! The others (excepting his sister who isn't in this video) treat him very gently and move out of his way when he's going someplace. The opal, Octavian, watches him pretty much all the time. He's a really nice guy :)
